Cloudera enhances metadata management solutions

With data catalogue and Iceberg REST integration

Cloudera has unveiled significant updates to its metadata management solutions, designed to boost open interoperability and meet growing data security and governance demands.

The new features showcased at Cloudera’s EVOLVE24 conference at the Sands Expo & Convention Centre in Singapore from August 6-7, 2024, mark a significant leap forward in metadata management capabilities.

Attendees at the Singapore event explored the enhanced capabilities while interacting with Cloudera experts about how the company’s hybrid open data lakehouse drives innovation in data analytics and AI.

As enterprises increasingly invest in generative AI and other advanced technologies, the need for robust, adaptable metadata management solutions has never been more critical. Cloudera’s latest updates aim to provide a unified, secure platform that maximises metadata management’s transformative potential.

These updates are expected to enhance performance, scalability, and resilience while optimising metadata management by reducing the total cost of ownership (TCO). The new features also support metadata sharing without duplicating data, enabling more incredible innovation with third-party tools and avoiding vendor lock-in.

Apache Iceberg

Cloudera’s new integration allows access to Apache Iceberg tables using third-party engines. This development facilitates using various tools while maintaining unified security and governance. By consolidating data access and permissions, this integration reduces the risk of data breaches and minimises the complexity of managing multiple security layers.

In technical preview, Cloudera’s SDX is a cloud-native, containerised solution offering end-to-end data security, governance, and metadata management. Enhanced for excellent elasticity and performance, SDX provides self-service data access, minimises breach risks through consolidated security functions, and supports comprehensive management across cloud and on-premises environments.

Dipto Chakravarty, Chief Product Officer, Cloudera, noted: “Our platform is designed to offer unmatched performance and cost-efficiency in managing expanding metadata. By adhering to open standards, we ensure seamless integration across any ecosystem, helping enterprises leverage their AI investments effectively.”

Sanjeev Mohan, a data industry analyst, said: “Organisations are seeking a unified approach to accessing and governing their data assets, regardless of location or format.

“The enhanced data catalogue with Iceberg REST APIs and fine-grained access control addresses this need by providing a consistent view of data and applying uniform policies.”
