Green Riyadh Project Launches Tree-Planting Initiative
On Tuesday, the Green Riyadh initiative announced the beginning of tree planting in residential districts, a key component of the program that seeks to increase green space in the city. Initiated by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, it is one of four megaprojects in Riyadh that King Salman has launched.
The program’s goal is to plant trees in over 120 residential areas. Designs have been established according to international environmental standards that account for regional differences. Development of parks in residential areas, tree planting on secondary streets, tree-lined sidewalks and pedestrian crossings, tree planting around mosques, schools, valleys and parking lots, construction of large parks are all part of Green Riyadh’s plans.
Starting on December 29th, workers in the Al-Aziziyah area will plant 623,000 trees and plants in 61 schools, 54 parks, 121 mosques, and 78 parking lots. They will also include roads and sidewalks in the area totalling 176 kilometers. Towards the goals of the Saudi Green Initiative to plant billions of trees across Saudi Arabia, Green Riyadh is making a significant contribution.
More About Green Riyadh
The Green Riyadh initiative is a massive effort to increase tree cover in the city, making it a global leader in urban forestation. More specifically, They would plant 3,330 community gardens, 43 parks, 9,000 mosques, 6,000 schools, 64 universities, 390 healthcare facilities, and 1,670 public buildings across the city of Riyadh with 7.5 million trees. This is in line with the goal of boosting green space by 9.1 percentage points, from 1.7 square meters per area to 28 square meters. Aiming to enhance air quality and reduce city temperatures, the project will see the Kingdom invest $11 billion over the next decade to build more than 3,300 new parks and gardens. In addition, it seeks to improve Riyadh’s cityscape by reforesting residential areas. The mission of the program is to build a system to irrigate green sites and reutilize about 1 million cubic meters of treated water every day.
With the slogan “climate action, energy security, and economic development must be treated equally,” the Saudi crown prince launched the Saudi Green Initiative last year. Since the program’s inception, 18 million trees have been planted across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, with 13 million of those being in mangrove ecosystems. By planting 450 million trees and restoring 8 million hectares of land by 2030, the SGI estimates that annual carbon emissions can be reduced by around 200 million tons.
Takeaways
To further advance afforestation and reforestation initiatives in the Kingdom, the Saudi government has collaborated with a wide range of private sector businesses and organizations. The Saudi Arabian Oil Company-Saudi Aramco-is one such organization that has initiated programs to expand the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s green spaces. Trees will be planted around all city features and amenities, as well as in all of the provinces, as part of the Green Riyadh project. This will increase the overall amount of green space and the per capita share of green space.
