ADNOC unveils ‘H2GO’ station to examine viability of hydrogen-powered vehicles in UAE

Pilot station creates green hydrogen from water

Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has launched ‘H2GO’, the Middle East region’s first high-speed green hydrogen pilot refuelling station, to gather data on the long-term viability of hydrogen vehicles in the UAE by evaluating zero-emission hydrogen-powered vehicles.

The pilot station was opened ahead of the UAE hosting COP28 at Dubai Expo City from November 30-December 12, 2023.

Located at Masdar City in Abu Dhabi emirate of the UAE and operated by ADNOC Distribution, the pilot station creates green hydrogen from water using an electrolyser powered by clean-grid electricity.

Hydrogen creates no carbon dioxide (CO2) when fuelling vehicles. As a result, no CO2 is released into the atmosphere from production to end-use.

The hydrogen supplied at the pilot station will be certified as ‘green’ from solar sources by the International REC Standard, an internationally recognised certification organisation.

High-speed refueller

Equipped with a high-speed refueller from Linde, a leading global industrial gases and engineering company, the project will test hydrogen-powered test vehicles from Toyota, Al Futtaim Motors, and BMW, as well as UAE-based taxi operators.

The H2GO station is ADNOC Distribution’s latest mobility development following the launch of E2GO to build and operate electric vehicle infrastructure in Abu Dhabi emirate and the other six emirates that constitute the UAE.

Musabbeh Al Kaabi, Executive Director of ADNOC, Low Carbon Solutions and International Growth, said: “We are pleased to launch this unique high-speed green hydrogen refuelling station which supports the UAE’s National Hydrogen Strategy.”

Bader Saeed Al Lamki, CEO of ADNOC Distribution, said: “In line with the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative, we are committed to providing sustainable mobility solutions and supporting the energy transition. H2GO demonstrates our commitment to leveraging technology and innovation and capitalising on partnerships to deliver low-carbon solutions to customers.”

Abdulla Balalaa, Chair of Masdar City, added: “Masdar City is committed to sustainable transportation and has been a pioneer in multiple forms of transportation, from the first EVs in the UAE to the autonomous PRT system. We welcome this partnership with ADNOC to pilot hydrogen in the UAE.”

ADNOC has allocated AED55 billion ($15 billion) at the time of writing to reduce its carbon intensity by 25% by 2030 and to keep the energy giant on track to meet its Net Zero by 2045 aspiration.
