Lockheed Martin completes acquisition of Terran Orbital
Both entities have previous collaborations
Lockheed Martin has acquired Terran Orbital, a prominent manufacturer of innovative modular spacecraft that serves the global aerospace and defence sectors, along with its subsidiary, Tyvak International.
The acquisition, first announced on August 15, 2024, marks a significant step in Lockheed Martin’s strategy to strengthen its position in the aerospace and defence industry and enhance its offerings in the rapidly evolving space sector.
Lockheed Martin and Terran Orbital have previously collaborated on various initiatives, including projects for the US Space Development Agency and technology demonstrations.
Terran Orbital is known for its customisable spacecraft platforms, featuring interchangeable components and comprehensive mission services.
When combined with Lockheed Martin’s extensive expertise in mission system integration and payload development, the result is significantly enhanced space capabilities. This integration will improve manufacturing processes through automation and robotics, increasing capacity, speed, and advanced testing methodologies.
Robert Lightfoot, President of Lockheed Martin Space, stated: “The addition of Terran Orbital’s spirit of entrepreneurship to the scale of Lockheed Martin means there is a great deal of opportunity to keep pushing the boundaries of technology and space solutions together.” He also stressed the importance of their shared commitment to innovation and mission success.
Under the Lockheed Martin Space business umbrella, Terran Orbital will operate as ‘Terran Orbital, a Lockheed Martin Company.’ It will continue to function as a merchant supplier in the industry, providing holistic solutions that encompass satellite design, production, launch planning, mission operations, and in-orbit support. This strategic move aims to address better the complex needs of military, civil, and commercial customers.
Terran Orbital maintains facilities in various locations, including Boca Raton and Melbourne in Florida, Irvine and Santa Maria in California, Atlanta, Georgia, Tysons Corner, Virginia, and Torino, Italy. This broad geographic footprint supports its commitment to delivering robust solutions globally.
With Terran Orbital on board, Lockheed Martin is poised to deliver innovative technologies that meet the growing demands of its customers across various sectors.
