Lockheed Martin unveils Poland’s first F-35A
Set for key role in NATO’s defence strategy
Lockheed Martin showcased Poland’s inaugural F-35A Lightning II fighter aircraft at an event held at the company’s F-35 production facility in Fort Worth, Texas, on August 28, 2024.
The event underscored a significant enhancement in the Polish Air Force’s capabilities and reinforced the strategic partnership between the United States and Poland, a prominent NATO ally.
Senior leaders from the United States and Poland attended the ceremony, highlighting the importance of the occasion.
Major General Ireneusz Nowak, Inspector of the Polish Air Force, said: “The F-35 represents the next generation of air defence for Poland, joining a coalition of 5th-generation fighters in Europe and enhancing our air superiority.”
The F-35A, known for its advanced technology and versatility, will play a crucial role in NATO’s defence strategy involving Poland.
The induction of the F-35 Lightning II is expected to bolster Poland’s military modernisation efforts and its role in NATO missions. The new fighter aircraft, named ‘Husarz’ in tribute to Poland’s historic cavalry units, symbolises Poland’s commitment to strengthening NATO deterrence and situational awareness across Europe following Russia’s unproven full invasion of neighbouring Ukraine over two years ago.
Greg Ulmer, President of Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, said: “The F-35 is a powerful multiplier and essential for deterring threats. Today’s ceremony reaffirms our dedication to supporting Poland’s national security and capability development.”
The first F-35A, designated AZ-01, is slated for delivery to the Polish Air Force in December 2024 and will be stationed at Ebbing Air National Guard Base, Arkansas. This base will also be the site for Poland’s first international F-35 pilot training.
The F-35 fleet, which operates from 32 bases globally, has exceeded 889,000 flight hours. Lockheed Martin has delivered over 1,000 F-35s and trained over 2,500 pilots and 16,690 maintainers to address evolving global threats.
