Lola Cars Revs Up For Formula E Return With Yamaha

Custom Car Maker Eyes Sustainable Motorsport

Lola Cars, a renowned name in motorsport, is revving up for a grand return to the global racing arena. Teaming up with Yamaha Motor Company, Lola will compete in Shanghai’s ABB FIA Formula E World Championship (Season 11) on May 25, 2024.

With over 500 championship wins, Lola’s technical collaboration with Yamaha aims to develop and supply high-performance electric powertrains for Formula E.

This marks Lola’s strategic move to reignite its legacy as a premier motorsport design and engineering entity.

“We’re thrilled to confirm our Formula E entry,” said Lola Cars’ Motorsport Director Mark Preston. “It’s not just about returning Lola to the track; it’s a platform for technological advancement.”

The technical partnership signals Lola’s commitment to sustainable motorsport across electrification, hydrogen, and eco-friendly fuels and materials.

Till Bechtolsheimer, Chair of Lola Cars Ltd, expressed excitement about the collaboration, emphasising the focus on technological innovation.

New Opportunity

Yamaha Motor Company sees this alliance as an opportunity to advance energy management technologies through Formula E racing.

Heiji Maruyama, Managing Executive Officer and Director of Yamaha Motor Company, said: “Yamaha Motor Company is accelerating the research and development of various technologies that contribute to sustainability. As the technical partner, we hope to acquire more advanced energy management technologies through the highest level of electric racing in Formula E.

“We also share Lola’s new philosophy of sustainable motorsport, and we are very pleased and honoured to form this partnership with them.”

Since its acquisition in 2022, Lola Cars has been gearing up for this moment from its global headquarters in Silverstone, UK. The company, founded in 1958 by Eric Broadley, boasts an impressive accomplishment spanning various racing disciplines worldwide.

Lola’s ties with Japan run deep, with a rich history in Japanese motorsport, including multiple championships in the Japanese Super Formula Championship. This partnership with Yamaha further solidifies Lola’s presence in Japan’s racing legacy.

As Lola Cars returns to the limelight, its commitment to sustainable engineering underscores its vision for a greener, more innovative motorsport landscape.
