75% of UAE residents are confident technology is an answer to global warming
On the eve of the UAE hosting COP28 later this year, a new survey conducted among UAE residents reveals that 75% of people believe humanity will find technological solutions and adapt to global warming.
Conducted by YouGov among more than 1,000 UAE residents, the poll was commissioned by Dubai-headquartered Duke+mir strategic communications agency as part of its research paper entitled ‘Environment and Nature – 2023 UAE Spotlight’.
The study also revealed that 52% of UAE residents felt climate change is inevitable.
The year 2023 is the ‘Year of Sustainability’ in the UAE, under the theme of ‘Today for Tomorrow’.
Time is now
Mir Murtaza Khurshid, Co-Founder and Partner at duke+mir, said: “Now is the time for [UAE-based] individuals to do their part. In the [UAE’s] Year of Sustainability, COP28 is a generational opportunity to raise greater awareness of climate change and support the UAE to achieve its net zero 2050 vision.”
The UAE Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative is a federal programme to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, with the aim of making the UAE the first Middle East and North Africa country to do so.
The initiative aligns with the Paris Agreement, which calls on nations to prepare long-term strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and limit the rise in global temperature to 1.5C compared to pre-industrial levels.
Khurshid added: “UAE leaders have set clear targets to create a sustainable circular economy in the coming years. Now residents have an opportunity to follow this example and take more positive action towards the environment in their daily lives.”
Recycling behaviour
The duke+mir survey also noted that 50% of UAE respondents polled use recycling bins and facilities regularly to have a positive impact on the environment
When compared to the United Kingdom, where nine out of 10 people frequently recycle waste, the report demonstrates that UAE residents can do a bit more to help the planet.
As per research conducted by Yale and Columbia University for the Environmental Performance Index, the UAE is among the top 50 countries in the world for waste recycling, with around a quarter of waste already recycled
