UAE Set to Launch First-ever Metaverse Hospital

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced that it will be launching the first hospital in the metaverse. This virtual hospital is set to go live in October. The healthcare provider, Thumbay group, would manage the virtual hospital. Notably, this hospital would provide medical tourism services. Furthermore, the group plans to make it a fully functional hospital where patients can interact with doctors in the metaverse through their avatars.

How Would the Metaverse Hospital Work?

The metaverse hospital will be developed using advanced technologies like Augmented reality and Virtual reality. Primarily, patients will be able to use the metaverse hospital to consult with real-life doctors on various medical issues. In addition, persons intending to visit the Thumbay healthcare facility can use the virtual hospital to have a feel of what to expect. This is possible because owners would model the virtual hospital space after the physical structure of the Thumbay healthcare facility in the UAE.

In addition, the metaverse hospital would provide services tailored to patients who have been bedridden for a long time. According to the Thumbay group, the hospital would provide these patients with AR and VR headsets to virtually interact with environments outside the hospital. For instance, bedridden patients from foreign countries could leverage this technology to visit their faraway homes.

This service would also be available for paralyzed patients and people with permanent disabilities. The group believes that such a virtual experience would motivate long-term care patients and give them hope that they can get better and once again physically explore their environments.

In addition to AR and VR technologies, the group also plans to integrate artificial intelligence capabilities. For instance, the metaverse hospital would potentially have a feature that recognizes each patient’s face. AI would also enable the hospital to increase its knowledge of each patient’s needs. In addition, this would allow them to record patient information for future references.

Remote Consultation Fee

One critical question regarding the operation of metaverse hospital is whether and how the hospital would charge a consultation fee. On this point, Thumby has explained that a decision has not been made yet. The group, however, adds that such fees are likely to be in line with the teleconsultation fees charged by the healthcare operator.

The Growing Use of the Metaverse by UAE’s Health Sector

The metaverse hospital is not the UAE health sector’s first foray into the virtual world. Last January, for instance, UAE launched the world’s first metaverse customer service center in Dubai. This launch was facilitated by the UAE Ministry of Health and Community Protection (MOHAP).

This center is designed to allow customers to easily navigate the 3D space while providing an interactive and immersive sensory experience. In addition, the patients can quickly access the world of MetaHealth to chat with a real person from the Customer Satisfaction Center.

Conclusion

The use of the metaverse and virtual technologies in the medical sector is an exciting development. While it remains to be seen how the public would react, it is positive to see such innovation being directed at improving patients’ medical experience.
