UN Tourism and FIA to propel sustainable sports tourism
New MoU signed in Monza
The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism) and the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) have signed a strengthened partnership to advance sustainable sports tourism.
The new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), formalised during the Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend in Monza, Italy, underscores both organisations’ shared commitment to promoting sustainable practices and enhancing the benefits of sports tourism for destinations worldwide.
The agreement, signed by FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem and UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili, is set to leverage the influence of major sporting events to drive tourism, foster economic growth, and support environmental sustainability.
The partnership comes at a time when sports tourism is experiencing rapid growth. It is valued at approximately $609 billion and has a 17.5% annual growth rate. This sector is crucial in economic diversification, social development, and cultural exchange.
UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili, said: “The intersection of sports and tourism offers immense potential for economic growth and the promotion of cultural exchange. Our partnership with FIA is a crucial step in realising this potential.”
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem echoed this sentiment, highlighting the FIA’s dedication to sustainable tourism and social responsibility. “This partnership with UN Tourism is a testament to the FIA’s commitment to responsible travel and sustainability.
“By aligning our global initiatives with UN Tourism’s mission, we are setting new benchmarks for sustainability in all FIA events. We aim to advocate for sustainability, actively implement practices, educate future generations, and drive meaningful change.”
40-year collaboration
The FIA’s collaboration with UN Tourism spans over 40 years. The FIA serves as a leader in global motorsports and sustainable tourism. Under Ben Sulayem’s leadership, the FIA has overseen events such as Formula 1, significantly boosting local tourism in host cities.
In recognition of his efforts, Mohammed Ben Sulayem has been appointed as UN Tourism’s Ambassador for Sustainable Tourism in the ‘Sport’ category. This role underscores his commitment to integrating sustainability into motorsport and aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“I am honoured to be appointed as a UN Tourism Ambassador for Sustainable Tourism,” said Ben Sulayem. “The FIA has pioneered combining sport, mobility, and tourism with sustainability. Alongside our partners at UN Tourism, I will continue to focus on delivering essential sustainability solutions for the federation and the broader community.”
Looking ahead, the 3rd World Sports Tourism Congress, scheduled for November 28-29, 2024, in Madrid, Spain, will serve as a pivotal platform for advancing discussions on sustainability, economic development, and global collaboration in sports tourism.
The FIA’s involvement is anticipated to bring valuable expertise to these discussions, furthering the impact of this dynamic field.
