Its ‘willkommen’ as Germany invites GCC tourists to visit
New direct flights also unveiled
Germany is intensifying efforts to target tourists from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region by introducing new flight routes, travel itineraries available online, and other innovative digital innovations. The region is the European nation’s third-largest overseas tourism market.
According to the German National Tourist Office (GNTO), in 2023, GCC travellers contributed $2.71 billion to the German economy, a 24% increase from 2022.
The surge in GCC visitors is due to Germany’s mix of modern attractions and rich history. Popular destinations include iconic cities like Berlin, Munich, and Hamburg, which offer world-class museums, vibrant shopping districts, and historical landmarks.
Additionally, Germany’s commitment to sustainable tourism is gaining attention from travellers, with eco-friendly initiatives making the country attractive for those looking for responsible travel options.
GCC residents’ interest in visiting underscores Germany’s increasing attraction as a holiday destination and the deepening ties between Germany and the Arabian Gulf countries. One key development that strengthened this relationship was Germany’s expansion of direct flights from the GCC region to various German destinations.
Direct flights
For instance, German leisure airline Condor has launched direct flights between Berlin and Dubai. In contrast, Eurowings, Germany’s leading low-cost carrier, has launched new services connecting Berlin with Dubai and Jeddah.

New Cologne-Bonn and Stuttgart airport routes have increased Germany’s accessibility to Gulf visitors. These enhanced connections are expected to streamline the travel experience for GCC tourists, enabling more accessible access to Germany’s diverse regions, cultural landmarks, and historical sites.
Burkhard Kieker, CEO of visitBerlin, said: “Berlin is more accessible than ever for GCC travellers, thanks to enhanced flight options. These connections will allow visitors from the GCC to explore the city’s rich cultural heritage, vibrant neighbourhoods, and renowned medical facilities. Our goal is to offer seamless, enriching travel experiences, specifically tailored to the unique preferences of GCC tourists, further strengthening our bond with the region.”
Germany’s commitment to serving the unique needs of GCC travellers is further reflected in the efforts of the GNTO, led by Yamina Sofo, GNTO’s GCC Director. Sofo highlighted the organisation’s focus on providing diverse, immersive experiences tailored specifically for the Gulf market.
Through targeted campaigns like ‘Simply Feel Good,’ ‘CultureLand Germany,’ and ‘Tourism for All’, GNTO aims to showcase Germany’s cultural and natural beauty. These campaigns also promote inclusivity and accessibility, ensuring every visitor can fully experience the country’s offerings regardless of background or ability.
In addition to these developments, the GNTO has launched a cutting-edge initiative to engage further GCC travellers—’ Emma,’ an AI-powered virtual influencer that offers a unique digital touchpoint for travellers, combining real-time information with personalised trip planning.
