2024 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève celebrates watchmaking excellence

IWC Schaffhausen wins the Aiguille d’Or

The Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) celebrated the pinnacle of contemporary high-end watchmaking with a spectacular awards ceremony on November 13, 2024.

Held at the Théâtre du Léman in Geneva, the event, known as the ‘Oscars of the Swiss watchmaking industry’, recognised outstanding achievements in horology. Twenty-one prestigious awards were given to the most innovative and expertly crafted high-end timepieces.

The highlight of the evening, hosted by French actor Carole Bouquet, was the Aiguille d’Or (Golden Hand) Grand Prize, awarded to IWC Schaffhausen for its stunning Portugieser Eternal Calendar. The coveted honour is a testament to the Swiss brand’s dedication to artisanship and innovation.

Alongside IWC, several other esteemed watchmakers received accolades for their exceptional creations. Brands such as Berneron, Bernhard Lederer, Bovet 1822, Chopard, Daniel Roth, De Bethune, H. Moser & Cie, Kudoke, Laurent Ferrier, Massena Lab, Ming, Otsuka Lotec, Piaget, Rémy Cools, Van Cleef & Arpels, and Voutilainen were all celebrated for their contributions to the high-end watchmaking industry, with awards spanning multiple categories.

In addition to the category awards, the prestigious Special Jury Prize was presented to renowned artisanal watch case maker Jean-Pierre Hagmann. This honour recognises his exceptional artisanry and influence in high-end watchmaking.

90 timepieces

The 90 timepieces nominated for the 2024 GPHG, including the 20 winners, are currently on display at the Musée Rath in Geneva, where they will remain until November 17, 2024. For those unable to attend in person, the laureates of this year’s competition will also be presented from November 21 to 23, 2024, at the Central University Library of Bucharest.

The 2024 GPHG ceremony demonstrated watchmakers’ artistry, technical prowess, and the industry’s ongoing evolution, highlighting the dynamism, expertise, and creativity defining contemporary horology.

Created in 2001 and overseen since 2011 by a foundation recognised as a public interest organisation, the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève has for over 20 years been pursuing its mission to celebrate and promote the watchmaking art, thanks to the support of its public and private partners, notably its leading partner, FGP Swiss & Alps, as well as the involvement of industry stakeholders.

Launched earlier this year, the Portugieser Eternal Calendar is IWC’s first secular perpetual calendar. The 400-year gear ensures the calendar automatically skips three leap years over four centuries. Another key feature of this watch is the exact Double Moon phase display, which will only deviate from the moon’s orbit by one day after a world-record-breaking 45,361,055 years.
