49% of UAE residents use e-commerce apps to shop online
Latest YouGov survey reveals mobile-centric revolution in progress
According to the latest YouGov survey of retail shopping trends in the UAE, 49% of UAE-based shoppers use e-commerce apps as their preferred online shopping option.
The study also confirms that 40% of UAE-based residents rely on social media e-shops, 36% prefer web browsers on smartphones, and 31% shop online using retail brands’ in-house apps.
These statistics indicate UAE shoppers’ apparent preference for e-commerce platforms and apps and the mobile-centric revolution trending in shopping habits while also showing how rapidly the UAE’s retail landscape is evolving.

The more, the better
In terms of multi-app shopping culture, 27% of UAE residents have more than five shopping apps installed on their smartphones, with 42% of them being female and 21% of them being male.
The YouGov research also explores the UAE’s retail shopping frequency, with monthly and weekly purchases being the norm, reflecting a balanced mix of convenience and spending.
31% of UAE residents shop not weekly but at least once a month, 29% do not shop daily but at least once a week, 18% do not shop monthly but at least a couple of times a year, 17% shop every day or almost every other day, and 5% rarely shop or only once a year or even less.
The categories
In terms of preferred online shopping categories for UAE-based consumers, 57% purchase fashion apparel, 46% groceries, 41% personal electronics, 37% skincare and beauty, 37% household appliances, 34% hotels and flights, 26% out-of-home electronics, 19% video games, 17% financial investments, and 1% do not know their preference for online shopping.
Regarding gender nuances across various mobile shopping categories in the UAE, women lead in skincare and fashion, while men dominate in household appliances and personal gadgets.
In this scenario: Skincare and beauty: women 55% versus men 29%; household electronics: women 29% versus men 40%; fashion apparel: women 65% versus men 54%; personal electronics: women 29% versus men 40%; and hotels and flights: women 40% versus men 31%.
