GlobalData reports a surge in defensive AI innovation

Google has unveiled a new cyber defence initiative

Concerning defensive AI and in response to Google’s recent announcement of the AI Cyber Defence Initiative, there is a growing emphasis on the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in safeguarding against sophisticated cyber threats globally.

GlobalData, a prominent data and analytics company, notes that AI is expected to transform organisations’ approach to combating cyber risks, with an increasing focus on threat detection and neutralisation.

Using GlobalData’s Technology Foresight tool to analyse AI cyber threat detection technology, a significant surge in patent filings is revealed, growing from 387 in 2018 to 1,098 in 2023.

This surge indicates a robust growth trajectory in AI-driven security solutions.

Additionally, the entry of 53 new companies in 2023, bringing the total to 239, highlights the expanding interest and investment in this critical technology area.

Crucial role of AI

Vaibhav Gundre, Project Manager of Disruptive Tech at GlobalData, notes the crucial role of AI in improving threat identification, managing vulnerabilities, and enhancing incident response efficiency.

Gundre notes a 13% compound annual growth rate in patent applications over the last three years, reflecting a solid commitment to innovation in defensive AI.

The collaboration between AIShield and DEKRA is spotlighted in GlobalData’s Disruptor Intelligence Centre analysis as a notable effort to enhance the security of AI models and systems.

The partnership aims to bolster cyber-resilience across industries and build trust in AI technologies through advanced training, assessment, and protection strategies.

Another proactive collaboration in the cybersecurity landscape is highlighted, with Darktrace partnering with Cyware to facilitate defensive AI cooperation between security teams and share threat intelligence.

Mitigating risks

This approach enables organisations to mitigate risks and respond effectively to emerging cyber threats.

AI cyber threat detection is found to have applications across diverse use cases, including threat detection in security cameras, real-time malware detection, network threat detection, anomaly detection in critical infrastructure, fraud prevention, and AI-powered surveillance systems.

Gundre concludes that while organisations harness the power of AI cyber threat detection, they must confront significant challenges, including the rapid evolution of cyber threats and the complexity of regulatory landscapes.

He says there is a need for continuous innovation and collaboration in defensive AI, adding that addressing these challenges requires a concerted effort from industry stakeholders.

By staying vigilant and adopting a proactive approach, organisations can confidently navigate the evolving cybersecurity landscape, safeguarding critical assets and preserving digital trust.

GlobalData’s Disruptor Intelligence Centre decodes emerging tech-enabled opportunities with information on promising start-ups, technology-led innovations, the latest sector trends, consumer insights, and venture capital portfolio investments.

It helps to monitor competitor strategies, predict emerging trends, monetise disruptive innovation, decode smart money, mine thought leadership, and capture digital consumers.
