Abu Dhabi-Yekaterinburg flights begin in December 2024
Twice-weekly operation scheduled
Air Arabia Abu Dhabi will launch direct flights connecting Abu Dhabi, the Emirati capital city, to Yekaterinburg, Russia, effective December 27, 2024.
The low-cost carrier’s new nonstop service will operate twice weekly, between Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi and Koltsovo International Airport in Yekaterinburg.
Yekaterinburg is a prominent city in west-central Russia. It serves as the administrative centre of Sverdlovsk Oblast and is the fourth-largest city in Russia, with a population of approximately 1.5 million.
Situated along the Iset River, Yekaterinburg is a significant cultural and industrial hub. It is notable for its heavy engineering industries, including metallurgical and chemical machinery.
Founded in 1723, the city is named after Catherine I of Russia and has a rich historical significance, particularly in the context of the Russian Revolution. It was the location where Tsar Nicholas II and his family were executed in 1918, making it a site of interest for historians and tourists alike.
Culturally, Yekaterinburg is known for its vibrant arts scene, featuring theatres, museums, and galleries showcasing local and international artists. The city hosts various festivals and events throughout the year, further enriching its cultural landscape.
Modern Yekaterinburg has also embraced contemporary architecture, particularly in the Yekaterinburg City district, now characterised by skyscrapers and modern commercial spaces. As a key transport hub connecting Europe and Asia, Yekaterinburg plays a vital role in Russia’s economic and cultural dynamics.
Adel Al Ali, Group CEO of Air Arabia, said: “We are delighted to introduce the new route to Yekaterinburg, the second Russian city Air Arabia Abu Dhabi serves after Moscow. This addition strengthens the UAE capital’s connectivity with key destinations, enhancing travel options for our customers while contributing to the growth of the UAE’s travel and tourism industries.”
Following Russia’s unprovoked invasion of sovereign Ukraine and as the conflict continues, all European Union-headquartered passenger and cargo airlines have long stopped operating regular flights to Russia, a situation being filled in by Middle East-based carriers.
