NSG acquires UP42 startup from Airbus
Boosting Saudi space ambitions
Neo Space Group (NSG), Saudi Arabia’s leading commercial space services provider, has acquired UP42, a next-generation Earth observation (EO) digital platform from Airbus Defence and Space. The deal is subject to the satisfaction of customary closing conditions, including regulatory clearances.
The acquisition of startup UP42, launched in 2019 in Berlin, Germany, comes as NSG positions itself at the forefront of Saudi Arabia’s rapidly growing space economy. The platform streamlines access to and analysis of geospatial data, providing users with critical insights into Earth’s environment via a cloud-based solution.
By incorporating UP42’s capabilities into its geospatial division, NSG aims to offer cutting-edge services to address real-world challenges in industries ranging from agriculture to infrastructure monitoring.
The partnership between NSG, a Saudi Public Investment Fund-owned company, and Airbus marks a significant step in Saudi Arabia’s space ambitions. NSG’s acquisition of UP42 is set to boost its position as a global leader in geospatial innovation.
Martijn Blanken, NSG’s CEO, described the integration of UP42 as an opportunity to deliver cutting-edge insights in one of the world’s fastest-growing economies. “This acquisition is pivotal in fulfilling our vision to lead innovation in the geospatial sector,” said Blanken.
As part of this strategic move, UP42’s platform, which offers customers access to a diverse range of geospatial data from over 80 leading global providers, will become a key component of NSG’s growing satellite and space services portfolio.
UP42’s platform simplifies data management and processing, enabling customers to create geospatial solutions more effectively. This is especially important in industries that rely on complex data sets, such as urban planning, disaster management, and energy.
NSG’s geospatial division is expanding rapidly, especially after it acquired Taqnia ETS, a Saudi Arabia-based technology firm. Adding UP42 to NSG’s portfolio is expected to significantly enhance its ability to provide geospatial services to local and international clients.
The integration of UP42’s platform into Saudi Arabia’s broader ecosystem is poised to transform how geospatial data is accessed and utilised, creating new opportunities for businesses and government agencies.
With the support of the Saudi government’s Vision 2030 initiative, which aims to diversify the economy and enhance the Kingdom’s position in the global space industry, NSG is playing a vital role in shaping the future of Earth observation in the Middle East region.
Blanken emphasised that the acquisition of UP42 will help NSG fulfil its long-term goals by further enhancing Saudi Arabia’s capabilities in geospatial intelligence. “This is an exciting step for NSG as we look to drive space and satellite sector growth both locally and internationally,” he said.
The integration of UP42’s platform is expected to offer a wide range of applications for industries across Saudi Arabia. From improving crop yields in agriculture to streamlining infrastructure development, the insights derived from geospatial data are set to become game-changers for various sectors.
For example, real-time Earth observation data can be crucial for predicting natural disasters, managing risks, and coordinating response efforts in disaster management. Furthermore, accessing and analysing large datasets will empower Saudi businesses to optimise their operations and make better-informed decisions.
