BMW Motorrad unveils New R 18 models

With enhanced features

BMW Motorrad has unveiled its updated R 18 family for the 2025 model year, introducing technical improvements, new design elements, and optional equipment across the entire range. The BMW R 18 series, launched in 2020, has undergone significant refinement to offer even more riding enjoyment, enhanced comfort, and an updated aesthetic.

The latest updates span the R 18, R 18 Classic, R 18 Roctane, R 18 B, and R 18 Transcontinental, ensuring that every model aligns with the latest EU 5+ emissions standards while offering superior performance and customisation options.

BMW Motorrad has made significant technical advancements to the R 18 models, notably increasing the torque of the 1,802 cc Big Boxer engine. Now producing 163 Nm of torque at 3,000 rpm (up 5 Nm from previous models), this boost enhances the cruising experience, providing more power and a superior ride across all RPM ranges, especially between 2,000 and 4,000 rpm.

Markus Lederer, Head of the Boxer Series at BMW Motorrad, stated: “Even more riding fun – that was our goal when revising the BMW R 18 and R 18 Classic. We have refined the design style, added numerous improvements in detail and comfort, and made the R 18 even more fun to ride with the 18-inch rear wheel.

“In addition to new finishes and equipment, the R 18 Roctane, R 18 B, and R 18 Transcontinental have also undergone a technical revision to bring the entire BMW R 18 range into line with the EU 5+ standard.”

The R 18 models also benefit from a new set-up in the spring/damping rates for the rear suspension, optimised to work with the newly introduced 18-inch rear wheel. The wheel, paired with the new tyre dimension of 180/55 B 18, offers a more comfortable and responsive ride. Standard features now include daytime running lights (depending on the market), a USB-C charging socket, and the option of upgraded contrast-cut wheels for added customisation.

Numerous updates

Visually, the R 18 models have received numerous updates to enhance their classic cruiser appeal while infusing a modern and dynamic edge. The R 18 features newly crafted front and rear wheel covers, with an updated seven-double-spoke wheel design for a more contemporary look. The rear wheel is now 18 inches in diameter, up from the previous 16 inches, further emphasising the bike’s dynamic character.

The R 18’s sculptural fuel tank design has also been refined. It extends seamlessly along the top to the rear fender, creating a smooth, unified visual flow. The front fender has been modernised with a more dynamic surface elevation, while the side cover has a more defined contour. Together, these elements work to provide a sleek and integrated design.

BMW has also introduced new silencer designs with a circular cross-section, a more comfortable, removable single seat with 10 mm thicker foam, and revised contours. The seat can be conveniently unlocked via a push button hidden beneath a cover. These design updates are complemented by a “rough look” on the fork section, with the fork tubes now free of classic fork sleeves.

The R 18 Classic has also undergone design upgrades, enhancing its nostalgic touring bike credentials. The most notable changes are the new front mudguard, borrowed from the R 18 B, and a 19-inch spoke front wheel, replacing the previous 16-inch wheel. This not only improves the aesthetic but also enhances performance. The R 18 Classic also features side covers and rear silencers with a more traditional design, underlining its classic touring bike identity.

New features for the R 18 Classic include standard daytime running lights (depending on the market) and a USB-C charging socket. The new “Blacked Out” equipment variant is available for the R 18 and R 18 Classic, offering an elegant, robust look with black high-gloss and dark chrome elements.

BMW Motorrad continues offering various customisation options and original accessories for the R 18 models. New optional equipment includes a Comfort package with cruise control, heated grips, Hill Start Control, and lockable fuel filler caps. Spoked wheels, contrast-cut wheels, and dragbar handlebars in black or chrome are also available.

In addition, new BMW Motorrad accessories, such as cockpit trim in Blackstorm Metallic, engine protection bars, and black leg rests, further enhance the ability to personalise the bike.

In addition to the R 18 and R 18 Classic, the R 18 Roctane, R 18 B, and R 18 Transcontinental also receive fresh design touches and updated features. The R 18 Roctane now comes in a new Two-Tone Dragonfire Red Metallic colour. At the same time, the R 18 B and R 18 Transcontinental both receive the latest “favourites button” for quicker access to commonly used functions. The R 18 Transcontinental also benefits from the new colour option and improved standard features, including the Comfort package.

All R 18 models now have the Euro 5+ compliant engine, ensuring enhanced performance and environmental compliance. Additionally, several models’ push rods, intake silencers, and headlamp inner rings now come in Dark Chrome, further enhancing the premium look of the R 18 family.
