In collaboration with Sho Shibuya
Lufthansa has unveiled an innovative addition to its newly launched Allegris First Class experience—exclusive loungewear created in collaboration with renowned Japanese artist Sho Shibuya.
The limited-edition loungewear, set to be available on select Lufthansa flights beginning in February, offers passengers an elevated level of comfort and a rare, wearable piece of art inspired by the artist’s skyward vision.
Sho Shibuya, known for his minimalist use of colour gradients, was inspired by a unique moment at 10,000 metres above the earth. On a long-haul flight, Shibuya captured a striking sky image through his aeroplane window—an ethereal gradient of white, azure, and deep blue.
“The symmetry of the gradient from top to bottom makes it unique and reflects the flying experience,” explains Shibuya. “The white in the middle represents the clouds, while the deep blue at the top represents the sky and the ocean at the bottom.”
The bespoke loungewear, which includes pyjamas, will be available exclusively to passengers on Lufthansa’s Allegris First Class flights between Munich and New York (MUC-JFK). The collection offers an exceptional blend of comfort and art, bringing a slice of Shibuya’s celebrated gradient colours to the skies.
Lufthansa’s Allegris First Class is known for its luxurious features, including fully enclosed suites, a state-of-the-art entertainment system, and an elevated culinary experience. But with this latest collaboration, passengers can indulge in an added touch of luxury with the wearable art accompanying the high-end experience. Designed in a limited quantity, the loungewear cannot be purchased and is only available to select guests, making it a genuinely exclusive offering.
The collaboration comes when Shibuya is at the peak of his career. Based in Brooklyn, New York, he began exploring colour gradients and the hues of the sky during the pandemic.
“Watching the sunrise through my small window became my only source of hope at the time,” Shibuya explains. His daily ritual of capturing the sunrise over New York City, often through the pages of the New York Times, became a meditative process. Shibuya would paint over the front pages, leaving only the masthead visible. The artist notes, “The sunrise stands for the beginning. It reminds us that our surroundings are transient and unique.”
Since then, the artist’s work has garnered widespread acclaim and has been exhibited in prestigious locations like the Triennale Milano and the MoMu—Fashion Museum in Antwerp. Luxury brands have noted this, with renowned figures such as Anthony Vaccarello, the creative director of Saint Laurent, commissioning Shibuya to design an exhibition space at Art Basel Miami Beach. Shibuya’s collaboration with Lufthansa is a testament to his rising influence and ability to connect art with everyday life.
Translating his vision to fabric was no small feat. To bring Shibuya’s colour gradient to life, Lufthansa enlisted Tekla, a Copenhagen-based homeware brand known for its minimalist aesthetic and high-quality artisanry. Founded in 2017, Tekla draws inspiration from modernist architects like Le Corbusier and Donald Judd, creating understated, functional designs. The partnership between Tekla and Shibuya aimed to preserve the purity of the artist’s gradient while ensuring the loungewear maintained an exceptionally high level of comfort.
“Transferring colour to fabric is completely different from painting on a canvas,” Shibuya admits. “The Tekla team did an excellent job of realising my artwork, and when I imagine people wearing it above the clouds, I can’t help but smile.” The result is a sophisticated and serene loungewear collection that embodies Shibuya’s artistic vision while providing passengers with comfort that befits the luxurious surroundings of Lufthansa’s Allegris First Class.
The exclusive loungewear collection, offered on select flights starting in February, is a unique and fleeting opportunity for Lufthansa passengers to experience art in the most unexpected form. Whether lounging in their private suite or preparing for sleep, guests will enjoy a sense of elevated elegance and serenity, thanks to the thoughtful collaboration between Shibuya, Tekla, and Lufthansa.
As more travellers seek meaningful and exclusive experiences, Lufthansa’s partnership with Sho Shibuya signals a new trend in luxury air travel, blending art, comfort, and design in an entirely new way. For those fortunate enough to experience the Allegris First Class service, it promises not just a flight but an unforgettable journey of creativity and comfort at 10,000 metres above the ground.
