After 21 years at the helm
Angelo Bonati, the former CEO who propelled Officine Panerai from a niche Italian watchmaker into a global luxury brand, has passed away at 68. His death marks the end of an era for the Florence-based company, renowned for its distinctive timepieces and strong maritime heritage.
Bonati joined Panerai in 1997, shortly after the Richemont Group acquired the brand. At that time, Panerai was a modest watchmaker producing timepieces exclusively for the Italian Navy.
Under Bonati’s leadership, the company expanded its offerings and established a strong brand identity rooted in its military heritage and distinctive design. He played a pivotal role in transforming Panerai into a globally recognised luxury watchmaking name.
Known for his passion for classic yachts, Bonati drew parallels between Panerai’s timeless designs and the elegance of restored vessels. His commitment to authenticity and craftsmanship resonated with the brand’s timepieces and his interests.
In 2009, Panerai unveiled its first in-house movement, the P.9000 series, marking a significant milestone in the brand’s evolution. This move demonstrated Panerai’s dedication to technical mastery and innovation in watchmaking. The P.9000 collection was showcased at an exclusive exhibition in Dubai, highlighting the brand’s commitment to excellence.
In 2018, after 21 years at the helm, Angelo Bonati retired from Panerai, leaving a legacy of transformation. His tenure is a testament to the power of visionary leadership in reshaping a brand’s identity and legacy.
Bonati’s vision led to the establishment of Panerai’s highly integrated manufacturing facility in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. This facility enabled the brand to develop and produce its mechanical movements in-house, enhancing Panerai’s autonomy and solidifying its position in the competitive luxury watch market.
Beyond his professional achievements, Bonati was admired for his dedication to preserving Panerai’s legacy and his ability to blend tradition with innovation. His passing leaves a lasting impact on the watchmaking industry.
Today, Panerai continues to be a luxury watch brand that combines Italian design with Swiss technology.
Panerai has not yet announced details regarding funeral arrangements or a public memorial.
