The first-ever hybrid Toyota Land Cruiser drives into the UAE

Ahead of global rollout

Toyota has launched the first hybrid version of its long-standing Land Cruiser in the United Arab Emirates, marking the country as the debut market for the vehicle ahead of its global release.

The hybrid model, known as the Land Cruiser LC300 Hybrid, represents a major shift for the Japanese automaker’s flagship off-roader, blending new-age electrification with traditional off-road capability.

The Land Cruiser Hybrid features a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol engine paired with a parallel hybrid system, producing 457 horsepower and 790Nm of torque. The powertrain delivers a 20 per cent increase in torque and a 40 per cent improvement in accelerator response compared to previous models.

Toyota has positioned the vehicle as the most powerful Land Cruiser to date, with enhanced fuel efficiency and lower emissions.

The Middle East has long been a key market for the Land Cruiser. First introduced in 1951, the vehicle has played a significant role in transportation across the region’s deserts and rugged terrain. Toyota has highlighted this legacy by choosing the UAE for the world premiere of the hybrid model, underscoring the vehicle’s deep connection with consumers in the Arabian Gulf.

Testing in UAE

Testing for the hybrid version included real-world trials in varied landscapes across the UAE, including deserts, mudflats and mountainous areas. Engineers also integrated insights gained from the brand’s participation in off-road competitions such as the Dakar Rally, ensuring the model is suited to demanding conditions.

Despite the move to electrification, the vehicle retains key features that have defined the Land Cruiser series. Toyota says the hybrid system has been designed to ensure high reliability in remote locations. If the hybrid components fail, the petrol engine can continue to power the vehicle. The hybrid battery area has also been waterproofed, preserving the model’s ability to drive through rivers and floodwaters.

In a region where off-road driving remains popular, Toyota has equipped the vehicle with electric power steering to improve control in low-speed and uneven terrain. A built-in 1500W AC inverter enables users to power household devices directly from the car, a feature likely to appeal to those using the vehicle for camping or outdoor work.

Al-Futtaim Toyota is offering the Land Cruiser Hybrid in VXR and GR-S trims in the UAE. Both variants carry model-specific hybrid badging and updated styling elements, including redesigned bumpers on the VXR version.

The launch aligns with the UAE’s broader environmental targets under its Net Zero 2050 strategy, which includes a push to increase the number of low-emission vehicles on the roads. Toyota has stated that the new model reflects its multi-pathway approach to achieving carbon neutrality, offering hybrid technology as one of several solutions to achieve this goal.

Jacques Brent, Managing Director of Al-Futtaim Toyota and Lexus, stated that consumer feedback from the UAE played a key role in shaping the development of the vehicle. The Land Cruiser 300 Series, launched in 2021, was well received in the region, and the hybrid version is expected to build on this success as demand for electrified vehicles continues to grow.

With the release of the Land Cruiser LC300 Hybrid, Toyota aims to maintain the model’s relevance in changing markets while responding to regulatory and environmental pressures. The introduction of hybrid technology in one of the brand’s most enduring nameplates reflects a broader shift within the global automotive industry, as manufacturers move to integrate sustainability into core product lines.

Toyota has not yet announced when the hybrid Land Cruiser will become available in other global markets. However, the company’s decision to launch first in the UAE underscores the importance of the Middle East in the future of the Land Cruiser brand.
