Pope Leo XIV makes unannounced ICU visit to gravely ill Spanish teen

Sparks global solidarity

His Holiness Pope Leo XIV made a private visit to a Spanish teenager hospitalised in critical condition, following a collapse during a major Catholic youth event in Rome.

Writing for the Catholic News Agency (CAN), Almudena Martínez-Bordiú, reported that the 15-year-old, Ignacio Gonzálvez, had travelled from Spain to attend the Jubilee of Youth when he was urgently admitted to the intensive care unit at Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital in the Italian capital.

The story, which was translated and adapted by CAN, was first published by ACI Prensa, CNA’s Spanish-language news partner.

The Vatican confirmed the pontiff’s visit to the boy’s bedside on August 4, 2025, describing it as part of the Pope’s broader engagement with young people during the Catholic Church’s special youth gathering that has seen over a million Catholic youth from across the globe being in Rome for the cherished Jubilee of Youth event held from July 28 to August 3, 2025.

The Spanish teenager, diagnosed with lymphoma affecting his respiratory system, had collapsed during the event’s August 2 vigil at Tor Vergata, attended by tens of thousands of young pilgrims from across the globe.

Request for prayers

Shortly after the incident, Pope Leo XIV addressed the massive crowd of youth and requested prayers for the teen, referring to him simply as “a young Spaniard” in need of support. “Let us pray for him, for his health,” the pontiff said, appearing visibly moved during the vigil.

Ignacio’s parents, Pedro Pablo and Carmen Gloria Gonzálvez, along with siblings Adela and Pedro Pablo Jr., flew to Rome upon learning of his condition.

According to the Holy See, the Pope visited the intensive care ward discreetly, joining the family in silent prayer before introducing himself. The family reportedly had their eyes closed at the time, unaware of his presence until a Catholic priest informed them of Pope Leo’s discreet entry.

The visit lasted approximately 30 minutes. Family members described the encounter as intimate, with Pope Leo offering pastoral support and words of consolation rather than formal addresses.

While the Vatican provided few details of the interaction, family members later described it as deeply personal and comforting amid their ongoing uncertainty.

Pontiff’s quiet entry

The teenager’s sister, Adela, 17, said the Pope entered quietly while she was praying and crying. “I went in crying and came out laughing,” she said. Her brother remains in critical condition, and his prognosis has not been publicly disclosed.

Pope Leo XIV also visited other patients in the hospital’s oncology wing following the meeting.

Pedro Pablo Gonzálvez, Ignacio’s father, said the Pope had spoken to the family about the importance of accepting divine will and finding peace in the belief in eternal life.

Carmen Gloria, the boy’s mother, said the Pope told her that if Ignacio had come all the way to Rome, then the Pope could also come to see him. “They were simple words, but full of affection,” she recalled.

The Pope’s message focused on trust in God despite uncertainty and suffering. The family, who identify as practising Catholics, said they found strength in the gesture and were moved by the international response and growing prayer support from the Catholic community. “We are a family like many others,” Carmen Gloria said. “To see so many people praying, and the Pope himself coming to visit, is a great consolation.”

Global appeal

The incident has resonated across Catholic communities globally, with many highlighting the Pope’s unannounced visit as an example of his direct and personal approach to pastoral care.

Regional observers note that his actions may also reflect the Vatican’s desire to present a more compassionate and accessible image of Church leadership, particularly in a year marked by youth-focused outreach.

The Jubilee of Youth is part of the broader Holy Year celebrations, which are expected to draw millions of visitors to Rome through 2025. The Vatican has placed strong emphasis on engaging young people, many of whom face challenges including mental health crises, social exclusion, and disillusionment with religious institutions.

The World Health Organization reports that lymphoma is the third most common cancer among adolescents and young adults globally. When located in the respiratory tract, as in Ignacio’s case, the disease can progress quickly and requires immediate and intensive treatment.

Bambino Gesù is one of Italy’s top paediatric hospitals, known for its oncology and transplant units. It remains under the jurisdiction of the Holy See.

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, while not directly linked to this specific case, has seen increased engagement with the Catholic Church in humanitarian and healthcare settings.

Pope Leo XIV’s papacy has continued outreach efforts in the region, particularly following historic visits by late Pope Francis to the UAE and Iraq in recent years. His emphasis on interfaith dialogue and human dignity has been welcomed by both Christian and Muslim leaders in the region.

In 2019, Pope Francis — the predecessor of Pope Leo XIV — became the first pontiff to visit the Arabian Peninsula, when he travelled to Abu Dhabi and signed the Document on Human Fraternity alongside the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar. The ongoing relationship between the Holy See and Gulf countries has included collaboration in areas such as health, education, and refugee support.

While Ignacio’s condition remains critical, his case has captured global attention, driven in part by the Pope’s personal involvement. Online search trends show a spike in queries related to Pope Leo XIV, the Jubilee of Youth, and Bambino Gesù Hospital in the days following the announcement of the boy’s hospitalisation.

A Vatican spokesperson declined to comment further on the Pope’s visit, citing the private nature of the meeting. However, the Holy See confirmed the pontiff’s continued prayers for the young patient and all others receiving treatment at the hospital.

The Jubilee of Youth continues through mid-August, with additional masses, spiritual activities, and cultural events planned. Vatican officials say the Pope remains committed to being present during the festivities, though no further hospital visits have been announced.
