Motorists in Ajman are being urged to stop driving without a valid license as police launch a two-month awareness campaign aimed at curbing unlicensed driving, reducing accidents, and promoting road safety across the emirate.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Ajman Police’s Traffic and Patrols Department, seeks to educate drivers about the dangers and legal consequences of driving without proper authorization. Officials stressed that unlicensed driving not only endangers the motorist but also puts the lives of other road users at serious risk.
Lieutenant Colonel Fouad Al Khaja, Head of the Traffic and Patrols Section at Ajman Police, said the campaign reflects the force’s ongoing efforts to safeguard lives through education and enforcement.
“Driving without a valid license is not just a traffic offence it’s a major threat to public safety,” Lt. Col. Al Khaja said. “A driving license ensures that a person has been properly trained and understands the laws that keep our roads safe.”
He clarified that while tourists and visitors may use approved international licenses, UAE residents are legally required to obtain a UAE-issued driving license. Once a residence visa is issued, foreign or international licenses are no longer valid within the country.
Lt. Col. Al Khaja added that unlicensed drivers will face strict penalties, with intensified patrols deployed throughout the campaign. “Our aim is not only to penalise violators but also to educate young drivers on the dangers of unlicensed driving. We urge everyone to respect the law and protect themselves and others,” he said.
According to the Ministry of Interior, Ajman recorded 24,480 violations for driving without a valid license a figure police say underlines the urgency of the issue.
The campaign also comes in line with the UAE driving license new rules 2026, which aim to tighten enforcement measures, enhance road safety standards, and ensure that only qualified drivers are permitted on the roads. The updated regulations emphasize stricter penalties for violations, clearer licensing requirements for residents and visitors, and stronger monitoring systems across all emirates. Authorities say these new rules are designed to reduce traffic accidents and promote a more responsible driving culture nationwide.
Legal Penalties Under UAE Traffic Law
Under Federal Decree-Law No. (14) of 2024 on Traffic Regulation, which took effect on March 29, unlicensed driving carries severe consequences:
- First offence: Up to three months in jail and/or a fine between Dh5,000 and Dh50,000.
- Repeat offences: At least three months in jail and/or a fine ranging from Dh20,000 to Dh100,000.
- Driving with an unrecognised foreign license: Fines between Dh2,000 and Dh10,000 for a first offence, escalating to jail time and fines up to Dh50,000 for repeat violations.
Ajman Police emphasized that every driver must hold a valid license appropriate to their vehicle type whether car, motorcycle, or heavy truck and carry it at all times. The campaign will continue for two months, combining awareness activities with strict enforcement to strengthen traffic culture and make roads safer for everyone.
