Egypt has officially unveiled one of the most anticipated cultural landmarks in the world the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) a $1 billion architectural masterpiece that unites over 3,000 years of history under one roof.
Located near the Great Pyramids of Giza, the museum’s grand opening marks a defining chapter in Egypt’s efforts to preserve and showcase its vast heritage. President Abdel Fattah Al Sissi inaugurated the site in a ceremony attended by international dignitaries, historians, and art enthusiasts, with visitors from across the globe gathering to witness the momentous occasion.
At the heart of the museum’s vast atrium stands a towering statue of Ramses II, welcoming guests into a space where ancient craftsmanship meets cutting-edge design. The GEM, spanning more than 480,000 square meters, has been designed to serve as a gateway between Egypt’s timeless monuments and its vibrant modern identity.
For the first time in history, all 5,000 treasures of Pharaoh Tutankhamun are displayed together — including his iconic golden funerary mask, gilded chariots, and intricately crafted jewellery. These artefacts, once scattered across multiple institutions, now form the centrepiece of the museum’s celebrated King’s Gallery, which also showcases rare ceremonial daggers and ornaments never before seen by the public.
“This museum is more than a home for relics; it is a living narrative of Egypt’s civilisation,” said Ahmed Ghoneim, CEO of the Grand Egyptian Museum. “By bringing together these treasures, we invite the world to experience the continuity of Egyptian creativity and innovation.”
The museum’s design a blend of modern glass façades, geometric stone walls, and panoramic views of the pyramids pays homage to Egypt’s ancient architectural genius while embodying the vision of a forward-looking cultural hub.
Experts estimate that the GEM could draw up to seven million visitors annually, solidifying its role as a cornerstone of Egypt’s tourism and cultural economy.
With its vast collection, immersive galleries, and state-of-the-art conservation laboratories, the Grand Egyptian Museum stands as a bridge between Egypt’s glorious past and its dynamic present a global testament to humanity’s enduring fascination with the land of the pharaohs.
