Emirates airline is transforming the way passengers travel through Dubai International Airport (DXB) with the rollout of its advanced biometric system allowing travelers to move from check-in to boarding without showing a passport or boarding pass.
The UAE’s flagship carrier has now installed more than 200 biometric-enabled cameras across its dedicated Terminal 3, marking a major step toward a fully digital airport experience aligned with Dubai’s smart travel vision.
A Faster, Smarter Way to Fly
The new system uses facial recognition technology to identify passengers from up to one meter away, streamlining every stage of the journey from check-in and immigration to lounge access and boarding. This innovation eliminates repeated document checks and significantly reduces waiting times, offering passengers a smoother, faster airport experience.
Who Can Use Emirates’ Biometric Services?
All Emirates passengers, including UAE residents and international visitors, can opt in for the service. Registration can be completed through:
- The Emirates app
- Self-service kiosks at Terminal 3
- Check-in counters at the airport
Passengers must give consent to use their biometric data, which will be securely linked with the UAE General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs – Dubai (GDRFAD) database.
How to Register and Use the System
Eligible customers aged 18 and above can register by scanning their passport via the Emirates app and linking it to their Emirates Skywards account. Once enrolled, travelers can enjoy a fully touchless journey through the following steps:
- Check-In: Register on the Emirates app or at a check-in counter.
- Airport Kiosks: Use facial recognition to complete check-in.
- Immigration: Breeze through GDRFAD Smart Gates without showing documents.
- Lounge Access: Enter Emirates Lounges in Concourse B with facial recognition.
- Boarding: Walk directly onto the aircraft after facial verification at the gate.
Coming soon, Emirates passengers connecting through Dubai will also be able to use biometric verification for smoother flight transfers.
Innovation Backed by Partnership
Adel Al Redha, Emirates’ Deputy President and Chief Operations Officer, said the airline continues to invest in technology that enhances speed, accuracy, and convenience for travelers. He highlighted Emirates’ ongoing collaboration with GDRFAD since 2017, which has been central to implementing cutting-edge systems that redefine the passenger experience.
Lieutenant General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director General of GDRFAD, added that the initiative reflects Dubai’s commitment to innovation and digital governance. “Our partnership with Emirates represents Dubai’s forward-thinking spirit — delivering a secure, efficient, and seamless travel experience for everyone passing through the city,” he said.
Data Protection and Future Expansion
For passengers without an existing GDRFAD profile, Emirates will create a temporary biometric record during registration. Once the passenger enters Dubai, the record converts into a permanent profile, simplifying future travel through the Emirates network.
Currently, UAE citizens, residents, GCC nationals, and visa-on-arrival travelers with biometric passports can use the Smart Gates to skip queues at immigration — a feature soon expected to extend to more international passengers.
As Dubai continues to position itself as a global leader in aviation innovation, Emirates’ biometric rollout marks another leap toward the airport of the future — where your face becomes your boarding pass.
