The UAE’s return to the World Expo stage in Japan after more than half a century was nothing short of spectacular. At Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai, the nation’s “Earth to Ether” Pavilion stood out as a breathtaking symbol of heritage, innovation, and cultural connection captivating over five million visitors in just six months.
Rising like an ethereal forest, the pavilion’s design featured 90 towering wooden columns, each 16 metres tall, crafted from over two million palm fronds collected across the Middle East and North Africa. The architectural masterpiece merged Emirati craftsmanship with Japanese carpentry traditions, celebrating a shared respect for nature, creativity, and sustainability.
The pavilion offered a sensory journey through light, texture, and storytelling a poetic reflection of how the UAE blends its traditions with forward-thinking innovation. More than an architectural feat, it became a cultural dialogue between two nations, marking the UAE’s successful re-entry into the World Expo scene after its first appearance at Osaka Expo 1970.
A living bridge of culture and innovation
From April 13 to October 13, 2025, the “Earth to Ether” Pavilion served as a dynamic bridge between the UAE and Japan. It embodied the shared values of progress, openness, and sustainability key pillars uniting both nations despite their geographical distance. Visitors experienced immersive installations celebrating Emirati identity, innovation, and global cooperation, resulting in record satisfaction ratings and widespread acclaim.
A milestone in UAE-Japan relations
Reflecting on the pavilion’s success, Shihab Alfaheem, UAE Ambassador to Japan and Commissioner General of the Pavilion, described it as “a meeting point of values and aspirations.”
“Every guest who entered helped write a shared story of dialogue, discovery, and collective progress,” Alfaheem said.
He noted that the UAE’s return to Osaka, 55 years after Abu Dhabi’s participation in the 1970 Expo, was deeply symbolic.
“It reaffirmed the deep friendship between the UAE and Japan and demonstrated how shared imagination can create meaningful change. It also showcased our progress as a nation from our first Expo experience in 1970 to our current leadership in innovation and sustainability,” he added.
Empowering youth and fostering dialogue
Central to the Pavilion’s success were 46 Youth Ambassadors who represented the UAE’s next generation of leaders. Through hospitality, storytelling, and “Youth Ambassador Takeover” events, they connected visitors emotionally to the UAE’s journey one rooted in unity, optimism, and ambition.
“The Pavilion’s success belongs to every partner, team member, and visitor who carried our message of connection and possibility from Earth to Ether,” Alfaheem said.
Record-breaking engagement and cultural exchange
The UAE Pavilion recorded 5,061,088 visitors and hosted 583 VIP delegations from 73 countries, including heads of state and senior officials. It became a hub for international collaboration, featuring thought-provoking events on sustainability, healthcare, and space exploration.
Highlights included ADNOC’s showcase on future energy, PureHealth’s discussions on wellness, and astronaut Dr. Sultan Al Neyadi’s “Beyond the Horizon” talks, which inspired audiences to explore the infinite possibilities of space.
A taste of Emirati culture in Japan
Cultural exchange flourished through traditional performances, craft workshops in sadu and khoos weaving, and the popular “Flavours of the UAE” culinary showcase by ICCA. The pavilion’s restaurant served over 258,000 meals, pairing Emirati favourites like Lamb Ouzi and Dajaj Machboos with Japanese culinary artistry offering visitors a delicious taste of cross-cultural harmony.
A celebration of progress and connection
In every detail from architecture and art to cuisine and conversation the UAE Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka embodied the nation’s remarkable journey of progress.
