Abu Dhabi has taken a major step toward the future of freight transport, with the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) overseeing the emirate’s first pilot operation of autonomous trucks within an industrial logistics zone.
The initiative, led by the ITC, an affiliate of the Department of Municipalities and Transport, is being carried out in partnership with global autonomous vehicle technology firm Autotech and AD Ports Group. The pilot is currently underway inside Khalifa Economic Zones Abu Dhabi (KEZAD).
First-of-its-Kind in the MENA Region
According to the ITC, the project marks the first operation of autonomous trucks for logistics and freight transport in the Middle East and North Africa region. The move reflects Abu Dhabi’s broader push to integrate advanced autonomous systems across various modes of transport.
The pilot focuses on testing autonomous truck operations within a controlled industrial and logistics environment. Trial runs have been conducted along designated routes inside KEZAD, adhering strictly to approved regulatory frameworks and operational standards.
Testing AI Systems for Local Conditions
Throughout 2025, the technology developer worked under ITC supervision to adapt artificial intelligence-powered driving systems to meet local road requirements and logistics demands.
The objective has been to ensure that the autonomous trucks can operate safely and efficiently in real-world industrial conditions. Authorities are assessing the technology’s readiness for wider deployment, while maintaining high safety and operational performance benchmarks.
Officials said the evaluation phase is critical to determining the viability of commercial-scale autonomous logistics services in the future.
Strengthening Smart Mobility in Abu Dhabi
The project aligns with Abu Dhabi’s strategy to expand its smart and autonomous mobility ecosystem. It also supports the emirate’s efforts to update regulatory frameworks and prepare infrastructure for innovative transport solutions.
By enhancing freight transport efficiency within economic and industrial zones, the initiative is expected to strengthen supply chain performance and operational productivity.
Dr. Abdulla Hamad AlGhfeli, Acting Director-General of the ITC, said the initiative plays a key role in improving the transport ecosystem and reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s competitive position.
“These initiatives contribute to enhancing the efficiency of the transport ecosystem, supporting the competitiveness of economic sectors, and reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s position as a leading regional hub in adopting smart mobility solutions and autonomous systems, in line with the UAE National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence 2031,” he said.
Preparing for Commercial Deployment
Authorities indicated that the pilot forms part of long-term preparations for the commercial rollout of autonomous logistics services.
As global supply chains evolve and demand for faster, safer, and more cost-effective freight solutions grows, autonomous trucking is emerging as a critical component of next-generation transport systems.
With this pilot, Abu Dhabi positions itself at the forefront of smart logistics innovation in the region, paving the way for wider adoption of autonomous freight technologies in the years ahead.
