The Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) has reopened Khalidiyah Park following the completion of an extensive redevelopment project covering more than 62,000 square metres, reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s commitment to enhancing public spaces that support healthy and active lifestyles.
A key feature of the upgraded park is a 660-metre enclosed cooled walkway that links different sections of the park, allowing visitors to move comfortably between areas while encouraging outdoor activities throughout the year. Rest areas have also been incorporated along the pathway to provide convenient spaces for relaxation.
The redesigned park layout has been developed in line with the Year of Family initiative, with improved accessibility for all members of the community, including senior citizens and People of Determination.
Eng. Eisa Mubarak Al Mazrouei, Director-General of Infrastructure Development at DMT, said the redevelopment reflects Abu Dhabi’s forward-looking approach to urban planning.
“This reflects our forward-thinking approach to urban design, offering visitors access to a diverse range of recreational activities. We were very conscious of Khalidiyah Park’s history and emotional value to the community, so every decision focused on balancing modernity with a sense of familiarity,” he said.
He added that the park’s central location and strong connection with residents made it important to ensure it continues contributing positively to the quality of life in the capital.
The upgraded park now includes walking and jogging tracks, two multi-use games areas, and dedicated courts for football and handball. Families can also enjoy five children’s play zones, including a sand play area designed for younger visitors.
Community engagement is another focus of the redevelopment, with the addition of an amphitheatre designed to host cultural events and performances. The park also features a central gathering space and a landscaped sunken garden with ambient lighting, creating new areas for social interaction and relaxation.
Sustainability was a key consideration throughout the project. Native trees and drought-tolerant plants have been introduced to reduce water consumption, supported by high-efficiency irrigation systems. The park also features smart LED lighting to lower energy use, along with permeable surfaces and materials designed to create cooler microclimates and reduce long-term maintenance.
The redevelopment of Khalidiyah Park forms part of Abu Dhabi’s broader efforts to enhance green spaces and create vibrant community destinations for residents and visitors.
