The Sharjah Art Foundation has announced the reopening of Al Majarrah Park on 21 May 2026 following a major redesign aimed at creating a vibrant public destination for residents and visitors in the heart of Sharjah’s heritage district.

Located alongside the creek and adjacent to the iconic Rain Room installation, the newly reimagined park has been designed to encourage recreation, social interaction and cultural exchange through a series of immersive public spaces and large-scale sculptures.

The redesign was developed by internationally recognised artist collective SUPERFLEX in collaboration with Schul Landscape Architects from Copenhagen and KWY.studio from Lisbon. Inspired by the city’s architectural heritage and desert surroundings, the park features uneven walkways that resemble rolling dunes, while the layout reflects the outlines of traditional courtyards and old houses once found in the area.

As part of the creative process, SUPERFLEX engaged with local residents to explore everyday objects that carried emotional or cultural significance connected to life in Sharjah or memories of their home countries. Ten selected objects linked to games, food, technology and nature were transformed into monumental concrete sculptures placed throughout the park, turning personal memories into shared public experiences.

Commenting on the reopening, Sheikha Hoor Al Qasimi said the park will serve as a gathering space for people of all ages while expanding the Foundation’s programme of exhibitions, public events and community activities throughout the year.

She added that the collaboration with SUPERFLEX builds on a longstanding relationship that began with “The Bank” project during Sharjah Biennial 11, highlighting the collective’s ability to create public art that deeply engages local communities.

Jakob Fenger, co-founder of SUPERFLEX, described the sculptures as tributes to the fleeting memories of people who have lived in or passed through Sharjah, noting that the installation aims to spark new conversations and shared stories among visitors.

The reopening of Al Majarrah Park strengthens Sharjah’s growing portfolio of permanent public art projects led by the Foundation, including Across the Chalk Line and Untitled: Excavation.

The redevelopment project was supported by Sharjah Municipality and the Sharjah Department of Public Works.
