Saudia has taken delivery of its first Airbus A321XLR, becoming the first airline in the Middle East and Africa to operate the new extra long-range narrow-body aircraft.

The delivery marks a significant step in the airline’s fleet expansion strategy as it aims to strengthen international connectivity with more fuel-efficient aircraft capable of operating long-haul routes with lower operating costs.

Manufactured by Airbus, the A321XLR can fly up to 8,700 kilometres with a flight endurance of up to nine hours, enabling airlines to serve long-distance destinations that may not require larger wide-body aircraft.

The aircraft is powered by CFM International LEAP-1A engines and is the first of 15 A321XLR aircraft scheduled to join Saudia’s fleet by 2027.

The addition positions Saudia among a growing number of global carriers investing in next-generation narrow-body aircraft to improve operational efficiency and expand route flexibility.

Regional aviation developments have also seen Etihad Airways deploy the Airbus A321LR, a shorter-range version of the aircraft, on medium- and long-haul routes with premium-focused cabin layouts.

Saudi aviation sector records strong growth

The aircraft delivery comes as Saudi Arabia’s aviation sector continues to post strong growth figures.

According to Saudi Arabia’s General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT), passenger traffic across the Kingdom’s airports reached 140.9 million travellers in 2025, reflecting a 9.6 per cent increase compared to 2024.

International passenger traffic accounted for 75.8 million travellers, while domestic traffic reached 65.1 million passengers.

Saudia maintained its position as the largest airline operating within Saudi airspace last year, securing a 25.5 per cent market share.

Saudi Arabia’s airports are now connected to 176 destinations across 66 countries as the Kingdom accelerates its aviation and tourism ambitions under Vision 2030.

New onboard experience introduced

Saudia said the new aircraft also introduces major features of its “New Saudia Experience”, including upgraded cabins, enhanced onboard entertainment and improved connectivity services.

The aircraft features 24 Business Class suites and 120 Guest Class seats.

Economy passengers will have access to 13-inch personal entertainment screens, charging ports and high-speed inflight internet designed for streaming, browsing and virtual meetings.

Business Class travellers will also benefit from Saudia’s in-flight chef service with customised dining options featuring Saudi and international cuisine.

Fleet expansion aligned with Vision 2030

The A321XLR deliveries form part of Saudia’s broader Airbus order for 105 aircraft aimed at supporting growing travel demand linked to tourism, business travel, religious pilgrimages and international events.

Saudi Arabia is preparing for several major global events, including the AFC Asian Cup 2027, Expo 2030 and the 2034 FIFA World Cup.

Ibrahim Al-Omar, Director General of Saudia Group, said the delivery reflects the airline’s ongoing transformation strategy focused on enhancing competitiveness and supporting the Kingdom’s aviation ambitions.

The fleet update also follows the airline’s partial resumption of flights to Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Amman earlier this year after temporary operational disruptions linked to regional tensions.

Saudia has since restored daily services on select routes connecting Jeddah with Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Amman.
