Amazon’s Largest Fleet Of Heavy-Duty Electric Trucks Unveiled
50 Such Vehicles Operate In California
Amazon has embarked on a monumental journey towards sustainable transportation, unveiling its most extensive fleet of heavy-duty electric trucks in Southern California, comprising a staggering 50 vehicles.
This initiative underscores Amazon’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions across its logistics operations in the continental United States. It presents a significant and exciting opportunity for potential partners or investors to join the company in its quest for sustainable transportation.
The deployment of 50 heavy-duty electric trucks in Southern California represents Amazon’s largest fleet of such vehicles in any country to date.
These environmentally friendly trucks symbolise the company’s commitment to sustainability and are a practical solution that will transform the delivery landscape in the US.
These trucks will play a pivotal role in decarbonising every facet of the delivery process, from the first mile to the last. We are thrilled to embark on this transformative journey and share it with our valued stakeholders.
Global Initiative
Amazon’s investment in electric vehicles is part of a broader global initiative to mitigate the environmental impact of its operations. The company’s electric trucks are expected to travel over one million kilometres annually, reducing tailpipe emissions.
As part of its comprehensive approach to sustainability, Amazon’s electric truck initiative is strategically focused on the ‘first mile ‘. This crucial stage involves the movement of goods from manufacturing facilities through customs, ports, and fulfilment centres, for which Amazon seeks to make this process as sustainable as possible.
In a significant milestone, Amazon introduced its first-ever electric trucks, drayage trucks, in ocean freight operations at the Los Angeles and Long Beach ports. These trucks are crucial in transporting cargo containers from the ports to Amazon’s facilities, where items are prepared for further distribution.
Amazon has also deployed 35 electric heavy-duty vehicles in Southern California’s middle mile operations, facilitating the movement of customer orders between fulfilment centres, sort centres, air facilities, and delivery stations.
Fast Chargers
To support the charging infrastructure for these trucks, Amazon has installed over 45 direct current (DC) fast chargers across 11 sites in the region.
Udit Madan, Vice President of Worldwide Amazon Operations, expressed pride in the launch of Amazon’s largest fleet of electric heavy-duty vehicles in California.
He highlighted the significance of these vehicles in addressing the challenges of decarbonising heavy-duty trucking and underscored Amazon’s commitment to identifying and investing in sustainable transportation solutions.
California Governor Gavin Newsom hailed Amazon’s initiative and highlighted the state’s role in fostering an environment conducive to sustainability initiatives. He lauded California’s climate goals, which have paved the way for businesses like Amazon to take charge of sustainability and implement transformative measures such as deploying electric fleets.
442km Range
The battery-electric Class 8 Volvo VNR Electric trucks, chosen for Amazon’s fleet, boast a range of up to 442km and are equipped with advanced safety features to ensure safe and efficient operations.
Drivers have praised the trucks for their impressive power, reduced noise levels, and ergonomic cab design.
Keith Brandis, Vice President of Partnerships and System Solutions at Volvo Group North America, commended Amazon’s commitment to electrifying its fleet and lauded the Volvo VNR Electric trucks for their efficiency and sustainability.
He expressed enthusiasm for collaborating with Amazon to create a more sustainable future in the trucking industry.
Amazon’s investment in electric vehicles is part of its efforts to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.
In addition to electric trucks, Amazon is exploring alternative fuels such as green hydrogen and biofuels to reduce carbon emissions further in its transportation operations.
The company has invested in innovative technologies and startups, such as Amogy and Infinium, to support the development of sustainable transportation solutions.
Amazon has also spearheaded the Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA) to accelerate the adoption of zero-emission shipping solutions in collaboration with other industry stakeholders.
Through these concerted efforts, Amazon is demonstrating its commitment to driving sustainability and fostering a greener future for logistics and transportation.
