Audi launches A5 e-hybrid quattro models

With the ‘e-hybrid’ badge

Audi has launched the latest additions to its A5 family, offering plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) models in sedan and estate (Avant) body styles for the first time.

These models, branded as ‘e-hybrids,’ combine increased power, efficiency, and an extended electric driving range, making them attractive for drivers seeking performance and sustainability.

Built on the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC), the new Audi A5 e-hybrid quattro models are available in two power levels, offering up to 270 kilowatts (kW). With a more powerful battery system and advanced hybrid technology, these vehicles can cover up to 110km in fully electric mode, making everyday commutes and urban journeys emissions-free.

Audi’s CEO, Gernot Döllner, highlighted the brand’s commitment to hybrid technology: “As part of our model initiative, we are significantly expanding our range of plug-in hybrids in 2025. Our new generation of plug-in hybrid models offers a sporty and comfortable driving experience and a harmonious balance between performance and efficiency.”

Introducing the ‘e-hybrid’ badge indicates that these models represent a step forward in electrified driving technology.

The A5 e-hybrid quattro models are powered by a combination of a 2.0-litre TFSI petrol engine producing 185 kW (252 PS) and an electric motor capable of delivering up to 105 kW. The higher-output versions, which total 270 kW, can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds, while the 220 kW variants achieve the same acceleration in 5.9 seconds. With a top speed of 250km/h, these vehicles maintain the sporty character that Audi enthusiasts expect.

A significantly improved high-voltage (HV) battery system is at the heart of these PHEVs. The new battery has a total capacity of 25.9 kWh (20.7 kWh net), representing a 45% increase compared to previous Audi plug-in hybrid models. This allows for a longer electric-only driving range, reducing reliance on the combustion engine and enhancing overall efficiency.

Charging has also been improved. The maximum AC charging power has been increased to 11 kW, reducing the full charging time to just 2.5 hours when connected to a suitable power source.

A key feature of the new A5 e-hybrid models is their intelligent hybrid management system, which optimises power distribution between the petrol engine and electric motor to ensure the best possible efficiency.

Driving modes

Two driving modes are available: ‘EV’ mode, where the car operates solely on electric power until the battery is depleted, and ‘hybrid’ mode, which balances power use to maintain a specific charge level for when electric driving is required later in the journey. For the first time, drivers can manually set their desired battery charge level via a digital slider in the vehicle’s infotainment system.

The vehicles also feature an advanced regenerative braking system, which enables the recovery and storage of energy in the battery during deceleration. Drivers can adjust the level of energy recuperation using steering-wheel-mounted paddles, providing greater control over braking performance and efficiency.

Predictive route data stored in the navigation system enhances energy recovery by automatically determining when to engage regenerative braking based on road conditions, such as upcoming bends or speed limits.

Audi has designed the new PHEVs to prioritise electric driving whenever possible. With an estimated electric range of up to 116km in urban environments (according to the WLTP EAER City standard), many drivers can complete their daily commutes without using the combustion engine. The A5’s hybrid system also intelligently decides when to use electric or hybrid power, ensuring maximum efficiency on short and long journeys.

Audi’s comprehensive charging network and services make charging easier. The included charging cable (mode 3, plug type 2) allows convenient charging at home or public charging stations. Audi’s charging service, available in 29 European countries, provides access to numerous AC charging points.

To further enhance convenience, the A5 e-hybrid models feature a pre-conditioning system that allows drivers to heat or cool the interior before entering the vehicle. This can be controlled directly in the car or remotely via the myAudi app.

The new A5 e-hybrid models’ standard equipment levels are impressive. Features include progressive steering, navigation, an MMI panoramic display, and an inductive phone charging pad.

The sportier 270 kW variants feature additional enhancements for a more dynamic appearance, including the S line exterior package, black styling accents, privacy glazing, and red brake callipers. Inside, the cabins have three-zone automatic air conditioning, sports seats featuring leather and artificial leather, and various digital connectivity features.

Despite the inclusion of the battery, cargo space remains practical for both sedan and Avant versions. The Avant offers a boot capacity of 361 litres, which can be expanded to 1,306 litres with the rear seats folded. The sedan offers 331 litres of boot space, which increases to 1,175 litres when needed. Towing capability is also noteworthy, with both versions capable of towing braked trailers up to 1,900kg.

Germany pricing

Pricing for the new Audi A5 e-hybrid quattro models in Germany starts at €62,500 for the base sedan variant and €64,150 for the Avant. The higher-performance versions, with enhanced standard equipment, start at €70,900 for the sedan and €72,550 for the Avant. European customers can place orders from March 27, 2025, with the first deliveries expected in April 2025.

With the launch of these new plug-in hybrid models, Audi is reinforcing its commitment to offering high-performance yet efficient vehicles. The A5 e-hybrid quattro models provide an ideal solution for drivers seeking a balance between sporty driving dynamics and environmentally friendly technology.

As the automotive industry continues its transition towards electrification, Audi’s expansion of its PHEV lineup ensures that customers can enjoy the benefits of electric driving without sacrificing performance or long-distance capability.
