Aviation Titans Converge In Dubai For IATA’s AGM

UAE Is First-Time Venue

The global aviation industry’s most influential figures are converging in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), for the 80th International Air Transport Association (IATA) Annual General Meeting (AGM) and World Air Transport Summit scheduled from June 2-4, 2024.

This is the first time the event is hosted in the UAE, with Emirates Airline as the host. Anticipation is high, with over 1,500 attendees expected, including industry leaders, government officials, and media members.

Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, UAE Minister of Economy, will inaugurate the proceedings with a keynote address welcoming delegates to Dubai.

Willie Walsh, Director General of IATA, said: “Dubai’s world-leading connectivity places it at the crossroads of the planet. And it will soon be the centre of the airline industry’s leadership as it hosts the 80th IATA Annual General Meeting and World Air Transport Summit.”

Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airlines, echoed this sentiment, highlighting Dubai’s pivotal role in global aviation and its significant economic contributions, noting that “aviation contributed 27% to Dubai’s GDP and supported $37 billion in gross value added”.

The World Air Transport Summit (WATS) agenda focuses on pressing issues confronting the industry, emphasising achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Discussions will delve into solutions such as sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production and carbon removal strategies.

The CEO Insights Panel, moderated by CNN’s Richard Quest, promises to offer valuable perspectives from industry stalwarts, including Vanessa Hudson of Qantas, Tim Clark of Emirates Airline, Scott Kirby of United Airlines, and Shai Weiss of Virgin Atlantic Airways.

Key topics slated for discussion during the summit include the evolving energy landscape, the role of AI in aviation, sustainability initiatives, collaboration between aviation and tourism sectors, and the outlook for air cargo.

A notable feature of the event will be the fifth edition of the IATA Diversity and Inclusion Awards, which recognises efforts to improve gender balance in aviation and is aligned with the 25by2025 initiative.

The theme of global connectivity’s benefits will underscore the deliberations, emphasising aviation’s pivotal role in employment and economic growth and its contribution to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs).
