Baku hosts inaugural Climate Action Week ahead of COP29

Partnering with London Climate Action Week

With anticipation mounting for COP29 (November 11 to 22, 2024) in Baku, Azerbaijan, the host city is set to organise the inaugural Climate Action Week from September 30 to October 4. The week aims to galvanise support and foster climate-issue dialogue ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference.

Organised under the guidance of COP29 High-Level Champion Nigar Arpadarai, Baku Climate Action Week will feature a diverse array of events. In collaboration with London Climate Action Week—the world’s largest city-based climate action initiative—the week will include high-profile international conferences and local and community-driven activities.

The event is strategically timed to emphasise Baku’s and Azerbaijan’s efforts in addressing climate change, paving the way for the forthcoming COP29.

It is expected to be a pivotal platform for discussing and promoting climate action, focusing on energy transition, urban development, water security, sustainable agriculture, SMEs, and green skills.

Two segments

The week will be divided into two segments: the first half will focus on public institutions, academia, and the private sector, while the latter half will celebrate arts and culture, providing a holistic view of Baku’s commitment to sustainable development.

Nigar Arpadarai said: “Azerbaijan is honoured to host COP29 in November, and we are fully committed to its success. Baku Climate Action Week is crucial in mobilising local and global communities, highlighting cities and the private sector’s essential role in climate solutions.”

COP29 President-Designate Mukhtar Babayev echoed this sentiment, noting the week’s significance in fostering national and international dialogue. “As we approach COP29, events like Baku Climate Action Week are vital for bringing together diverse stakeholders and showcasing Azerbaijan’s commitment to the green transition.”

Baku Mayor Eldar Azizov added: “This year is fascinating for Baku and Azerbaijan. We are dedicated to hosting a world-class COP29 and are equally proud to present Baku Climate Action Week. Our city’s rich cultural heritage will be prominently featured throughout the event.”

Nick Mabey OBE, Founder and chair of London Climate Action Week, highlighted the partnership’s significance: “We are thrilled to extend our collaboration with Baku. The model of whole-of-society engagement pioneered in London has inspired similar initiatives worldwide, and we are proud to support Baku’s efforts.”

Malini Mehra, Programme Director for Baku Climate Action Week, emphasised Baku’s pivotal role in the green transition: “Baku is set to play a historic role in climate action, and we are excited to showcase this through our inaugural Climate Action Week.”

COP28 was held from November 30 to December 13, 2023, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
