Boeing gets order for two MH-47G Block II Chinooks

Destined for US Army Special Operations

The US Army Special Operations Aviation Command (USASOAC) has awarded Boeing a $115 million contract to produce two MH-47G Block II Chinook helicopters. This latest order increases the number of MH-47G Block II Chinooks under contract to 46.

The new contract includes the production of two advanced helicopters and initiates advanced procurement activities for future units.

Heather McBryan, Vice President and Programme Manager for Boeing Defence, Space & Security, lauded the MH-47G Block II as an indispensable asset for special operations missions.

“Whether it’s operating in the dead of night or navigating challenging terrain, the MH-47G Block II is a proven workhorse for special operations,” McBryan said.

“It is our privilege to support ongoing USASOAC modernisation efforts that will continue to have a real-world impact on US national security.”

The MH-47G Block II Chinook is recognised for its reinforced airframe, redesigned fuel tanks, and state-of-the-art avionics, which enhance its global reach and operational effectiveness. The upgraded design also paves the way for affordable future modernisation, ensuring the Chinook’s continued relevance and reliability for decades.

Preferred heavy-lift

The H-47 Chinook is the preferred heavy-lift helicopter for the US Army and 20 other international operators.

This advanced, multi-mission, tandem-rotor helicopter excels in various roles, including cargo and troop transport, search and rescue, casualty evacuation, special operations, and humanitarian and disaster relief.

Its tandem rotor design enhances stability, control, and agility, making loading and unloading easier and delivering superior performance in windy conditions.

The Chinook’s rear ramp access is unrestricted by tail rotor clearance, enabling it to operate in challenging terrains such as unprepared or mountainous positions and execute precise pinnacle landings. Additionally, it can fly up to 20,000 feet, a notable altitude for its class.

Equipped with a sophisticated digital cockpit management system, the Common Avionics Architecture System (CAAS) Cockpit, and a Digital Automatic Flight Control System (DAFCS), the Chinook offers advanced cargo-handling capabilities that boost mission effectiveness and situational awareness.

For extended missions, the H-47 Chinook can be fitted with extended-range fuel tanks and equipped for air-to-air refuelling, allowing it to cover greater distances than ever before.

USASOAC’s Chinook modernisation programme supports over 20,000 jobs and involves 360 suppliers across 40 US states. It bolsters the national manufacturing base and sustains the new aircraft and fleet maintenance production line.
