Cloudera and Snowflake unite for enhanced data management solutions

Powered by Apache Iceberg

Cloudera and Snowflake have entered a strategic partnership to transform enterprises’ data handling – empowering businesses to harness the full potential of their data resources.

Unveiled at Cloudera’s recent EVOLVE24 conference in New York City, the collaboration introduces an open, unified hybrid data lakehouse powered by Apache Iceberg, which promises to streamline operations and reduce businesses’ total cost of ownership.

This integration ensures businesses can efficiently ingest, process, and analyse data, instilling confidence in the collaboration’s success. Cloudera’s extended Open Data Lakehouse interoperability with Snowflake allows joint customers to access Cloudera’s Data Lakehouse via its Apache Iceberg REST Catalog, enhancing data accessibility and usability.

One of the standout features of the new partnership is the ability for Snowflake users to directly query data stored on Cloudera’s Ozone, an AWS S3-compatible object storage solution, without needing to duplicate or transfer data. This capability reduces complexity and enhances operational efficiency, making it easier for organisations to maintain data integrity.

The collaboration also addresses critical cost considerations for enterprises. By eliminating data silos and optimising data pipelines, businesses can expect significant reductions in operational costs. This streamlined approach facilitates the delivery of analytics and AI use cases at scale and amplifies the overall value proposition for users of both platforms.

Several advantages

Moreover, the integration boasts several additional advantages. The managed Iceberg tables improve data performance and reliability, enabling organisations to manage and query their data better. This integration also unifies security and governance across the entire data lifecycle, allowing users to implement consistent security measures and manage metadata seamlessly.

Abhas Ricky, Cloudera’s Chief Strategy Officer, said the partnership will help customers simplify their data architectures and reduce security risks. He stressed the potential for collaboration to drive innovation and efficiency, setting a new standard for data-driven decision-making in modern enterprises.

Tarik Dwiek, Head of Technology Alliances at Snowflake, stated that the partnership allows customers to standardise on Iceberg tables. He reiterated the commitment to breaking down data silos and delivering a comprehensive hybrid data cloud experience.

In line with their commitment to advancing Iceberg adoption, Cloudera has also announced the technical preview of the Cloudera Lakehouse Optimizer, a new service designed to optimise Iceberg tables autonomously, further boosting performance while lowering costs.
