Dubai City gets new assessment system for cycling and e-scooter tracks

To enhance maintenance efficiency and sustainability

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched an innovative assessment system for cycling and e-scooter tracks and their assets, leveraging the latest innovative technologies.

The system marks a significant leap in monitoring and maintaining Dubai City’s cycling and e-scooter infrastructure and reflects Dubai’s RTA’s efforts to harness innovation and advanced technology to optimise maintenance efficiency, improve road safety, and support Dubai’s Sustainable Mobility Vision 2030. The initiative also plays a key role in enhancing the experience for soft mobility users across the Arabian Gulf emirate.

The innovative assessment system for cycling and e-scooter tracks and their assets promotes sustainability and operational efficiency while contributing to Dubai’s development as a global leader in smart mobility.

The digital solution aligns with the Fourth Industrial Revolution, applying cutting-edge technologies to create a virtual model or digital twin of the tracks. This allows for more accurate analysis and costs optimisation of the maintenance operations.

The new system is part of Dubai’s RTA’s broader strategy to create safer and more efficient tracks while encouraging the adoption of eco-friendly mobility solutions. Additionally, it strengthens Dubai’s position as a bicycle-friendly city with advanced infrastructure supporting sustainable transport modes.

The system uses advanced cameras and sensors mounted on electric bicycles to enable real-time, non-disruptive monitoring of cycling and e-scooter tracks. It ensures fast and precise performance analysis, offering comprehensive insights into track conditions and safety standards.

A key benefit of the innovative system is its ability to assess track conditions and proactively support predictive maintenance. It reduces the reliance on traditional inspection methods, which are slower and less efficient.

For example, the system can assess 120km of tracks in just four hours, compared to the 2.25km covered by traditional inspections per day—a 98% improvement. Moreover, it can evaluate 557km of tracks in a month, a 92% improvement over the older methods. This efficiency enables quicker decision-making and more strategic preventive maintenance and asset management planning.

Focusing on financial and environmental sustainability, the new system helps Dubai’s RTA reduce operational costs and emergency maintenance needs, setting new global benchmarks for asset condition, performance tracking, and user comfort.
