Dubai’s RTA unveils AI-driven road inspections project

Special vehicle inspects Dubai’s roads

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has deployed a vehicle equipped with AI-assisted automated road damage detection and traffic diversion technology to inspect Dubai emirate’s road network.

The newly launched pilot initiative is part of Dubai RTA’s commitment to harnessing cutting-edge digital technologies to enhance road quality and improve traffic safety in the Arabian Gulf emirate.

Equipped with smart technology, the vehicle can assess roadway conditions to ensure compliance with Dubai RTA’s technical standards.

The vehicle features a range of cameras, sensors, and other devices that detect damage to road furniture and facilities. It can also generate detailed reports and autonomously upload data to a digital system.

Hussain Al Banna, CEO of the Traffic and Roads Agency, Dubai RTA, said: “ [Dubai] RTA is focused on improving operational efficiency in monitoring and detecting roadway damage while enhancing response times. This initiative will not only extend the lifespan of assets but also maintain Dubai’s urban aesthetic.”

Al Banna noted that the vehicle significantly enhances the inspection process, achieving up to 30% more comprehensive site coverage and reducing inspection times by at least 70% compared to traditional methods.

The technology’s automated capabilities can generate damage reports with accuracy rates exceeding 85%, ensuring traffic diversions meet approved specifications for smooth traffic flow. This reduction in inspection times makes the audience feel the new system’s efficiency.

Dubai RTA remains dedicated to adopting the latest digital technologies in asset inspection and proactive maintenance as part of its strategy to keep pace with the ongoing AI revolution.

“We are committed to providing safe and efficient mobility for motorists and pedestrians in Dubai,” concluded Al Banna, highlighting RTA’s focus on maintaining high standards in road infrastructure and user safety.
