Emirates Environmental Group’s 3rd Panel Discussion of 2024 Echoes the importance of stable economy and society
Emirates Environmental Group (EEG), in association with key partners such as the Arabia CSR Network, the EmiratesGBC, the Clean Energy Business Council and the Swiss Business Council, successfully hosted a critical Panel Discussion, the 3rd for the year, at Five Palm Jumeirah on Thursday, May 30, between 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 noon.
The panel discussion aimed to harness the expertise of key industry leaders and navigate the discourse towards sustainable development and the impact economy and society plays in fostering the achievement of environmental goals.
While discussions touched upon several economic and social factors that can hinder sustainable progress including usage of resources, food security, inter and intra border conflicts, education, poverty, population growth and migration among many others. To understand the extensiveness influence on sustainable development and climate action were critical aspects that came through this panel discussion.
Mrs. Habiba Al Mar’ashi, Co-founder and Chairperson of EEG commenced the discussion by reflecting on EEG’s journey in the last five months before introducing the topic for the session. She stated: “Today’s discussion is poised to be another significant step in our joruney towards a sustainable and environmentally conscious future. If you read the news today from across the world, in all spheres, you will see that targets are not achieved are we are lagging behind. Whether in the increase in Climate change disasters, the economic turmoil in various parts of the world, the societal inequality due to instabilities, poverty, lack of resources and more. Thus this panel will help zoom on the same and explore the ways in which economy and societial instability are affecting environmental stability. By understanding the factors involves, potential solutions and actions required we will be able to pave the way for a more sustainable, accountable, and impactful climate future.”
To delve into the uncountable dynamics of economy and society on environmental sustianbility, the challenges and the optimistic outlooks, the panel prominently featured key subject matter experts who shared insights and perspectives.
The distinguished panel of speakers were:
- Ms. Hanan Khalifa Al Thuwaini – Coordination and Follow up Executive, Office of Undersecretary for Economic Studies and Policies Sector – Ministry of Economy
- Mr. Layth Dwairi – Co-Founder and COO of Tathmeer Agro Tech
- Ms. Dina Storey – CEO & Co-Founder of Optimum Green Ventures
- Dr. Salam Sharif – Director of Advocacy at Dubai Chambers for Recycling Business Group
The panel addressed key questions surrounding factores hindering sustainable progress, serving as a platform for stakeholders to navigate challenges in the climate sphere. The session addressed several important points:
- Understanding the Impact of Global Turmoil, considering the repercussions of war and geopolitical instability on sustainable development.
- Examining the Suitability of Development Programmes and exploring the challenges faced by nations in implementing sustainable development initiatives.
- Assessing the feasibility and pragmatism of future-proofing economic processes, including the need for subsidies and international support for developing countries.
- Navigating Political Landmines and analysing the role of governments in sustainable development.
- Addressing Poverty as a Multi-Faceted Challenge and the importance of unpacking the complexities of poverty eradication within the broader scope of sustainable development.
As a UNEP & UNCCD accredited NGO, EEG designed, developed and executed the panel discussion to address several of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG #1 No Poverty, SDG #2 Zero Hunger, SDG #3 Good Health and Well being, SDG #4 Quality Education, SDG #6 Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG #7 Affordable and Clean Energy, SDG #8 Decent Work and Economic Growth, SDG #9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastuction, SDG #10 Reduced Inequalities, SDG #11 Sustainable Cities and Communities, SDG #12 Responsible Consumption & Production, SDG #13 Climate Action and SDG #17 Partnership for the Goals.
The speakers shared valuable knowledge at the discussion, the session concluded with a lively interactive Q & A session where the speakers and members of the audience, including industry business leaders, government officials, world bodies, students from high schools & universities, educators and the media, shared their views, asked relevant questions, shared experiences and addressed challenges related to the the potianital ways to accelerate climate action in their relevant areas of interests.
As is customary, EEG had a segment of recognition for the new corporate members who have joined the organisation in the previous month, the host hotel and the speakers. EEG extends its gratitude to all attendees and stakeholders for their active participation.
