Ericsson and OPPO sign 5G global patent agreement

Several joint projects lined up

Ericsson and OPPO have finalised a comprehensive multi-year global patent cross-licence agreement, marking a significant milestone in cellular technology, particularly 5G.

Under the terms of the newly signed agreement, OPPO, renowned for its global smartphone sales and strong presence in emerging markets, will pay Ericsson royalty fees for using essential patents related to cellular standards, including 5G.

This mutual licensing arrangement ensures compliance with industry standards and underscores the importance of intellectual property rights in fostering technological innovation.

In addition to the patent cross-licence, Ericsson and OPPO will collaborate on various initiatives to advance 5G technologies. These efforts encompass joint projects in device testing, customer engagements, and collaborative marketing activities.

Christina Petersson, Ericsson’s Chief Intellectual Property Officer, highlighted the new agreement’s significance: “This essential royalty-bearing licence agreement with OPPO enables Ericsson to continue investing in fundamental communication technologies.

“It exemplifies the functioning of the patent licensing ecosystem, where agreements are reached through business negotiations, reflecting mutual respect’s patent portfolios.”

The financial implications of this agreement were reflected in Ericsson’s Q2 2024 financial results, underscoring its immediate and significant impact on the company’s revenue streams.

The agreement between Ericsson and OPPO adheres to global norms. Companies utilising cellular standards like 5G must enter into licensing agreements with patent holders, ensuring fair compensation for extensive research and development investments.

Ericsson anticipates further growth in its intellectual property revenues through additional 5G agreements and expansion into emerging licensing areas such as IoT (Internet of Things) and consumer electronics.
