How much do you know of the Ford Bronco’s 59 years?

Beginning in 1965

From its debut in 1965 as the world’s first sports utility vehicle, the Ford Bronco has epitomised off-road excellence and adventure. Initially codenamed Bronco and G.O.A.T. (Go Over All Terrain), this vehicle emerged as Ford’s innovative design bridged the gap between rugged utility and comfort, setting a new standard in the automotive world.

At its launch in 1966 in the United States, the Bronco came in three styles: the open-air roadster, the practical sports utility, and the family-friendly wagon.

Each model featured the distinctive two-door, boxy design with round headlights, initially powered by a robust 105 hp, 2.7L six-cylinder engine. Ford’s commitment to performance was evident as the Bronco later offered a more powerful 289-V-8 engine, further enhancing its capabilities.

Bronco has evolved over the decades, adapting to market demands and external challenges. The second-generation model introduced in 1973 added power steering and automatic transmission but faced a setback due to the oil crisis. By 1978, the redesigned F-Series Bronco, equipped with a V8 engine and new comfort features, became a massive hit, with sales reaching 180,000 units in two years.

Design shift

In the 1980s, the Bronco’s design shifted towards being smaller and more fuel-efficient, resulting in the compact Bronco II and the introduction of the Eddie Bauer trim package. Technological advancements such as independent front suspension marked a new era for the Bronco.

The late 1980s and early 1990s saw further updates with aerodynamic improvements, electronic fuel injection, and advanced safety features like anti-lock brakes and airbags. However, the fifth-generation Bronco, produced from 1992 to 1996, marked the end of an era as the iconic SUV was phased out.

Fans and Ford employees passionately preserved the Bronco’s legacy despite its discontinuation. The ‘Bronco Underground,’ a dedicated group of Ford enthusiasts, worked tirelessly for a revival. Their efforts culminated in the triumphant return of the Bronco in 2021, featuring a blend of nostalgic design and cutting-edge technology.

The sixth-generation Bronco, unveiled on July 13, 2020, offered a modernised take on the classic with two-door, four-door, and sports models. It retained its iconic look while integrating advanced features such as the Terrain Management System, eight driving modes, and powerful engine options. The new Bronco quickly generated excitement, with over 150,000 reservations in the first three weeks.

Bronco models like the Outer Banks, Big Bend, and Badlands in the Middle East cater to the region’s diverse terrains, from city streets to challenging dunes. The Big Bend model, with its 2.3L EcoBoost engine and six G.O.A.T. modes, and the Badlands model, with heavy-duty features like Fox Live Valve Shocks, exemplify the Bronco’s adaptability and performance in the Middle East region.
