Free messaging on all Lufthansa long-haul flights
From summer 2025
Lufthansa has announced that starting in the summer of 2025, passengers on all its long-haul flights can send and receive unlimited complimentary messages, including photos, during their journeys. The new messaging service, available on flights to destinations such as the USA, Brazil, and Japan, significantly enhances the customer experience on intercontinental flights.
The service will allow passengers to communicate with friends, family, and colleagues via smartphones or tablets, using familiar messaging apps without worrying about additional costs. This applies to travellers in all classes, making the service accessible to everyone aboard.
Dieter Vranckx, the Lufthansa Group’s Chief Commercial Officer, highlighted the importance of the new service: “The introduction of free messaging on long-haul flights is another important step in continuously improving our customers’ overall travel experience. We will continue focusing on highly relevant services to our customers.”
The free messaging service is part of Lufthansa’s broader strategy to offer various digital services to enhance passenger convenience. “What is already a great success on short and medium-haul flights will also be very popular with our guests on long-haul flights,” said Heiko Reitz, Chief Customer Officer at Lufthansa Airlines.
“Being reachable even during a long flight has long been a basic need and a decisive factor when choosing an airline. For example, free messages and in-flight internet offer our customers a portfolio of very attractive digital services.”
The new service follows the success of free messaging on Lufthansa’s short- and medium-haul flights, which passengers have received well since its introduction. Austrian Airlines has also offered free messaging on selected long-haul flights since 2024, and SWISS has implemented similar services on its long-haul routes. Both airlines are part of the Lufthansa Group, which continues to prioritise customer satisfaction and digital innovation across its fleet.
Lufthansa’s decision to expand the free messaging service to long-haul flights responds to passengers’ growing demand for connectivity while travelling. With more people relying on digital communication for personal and business purposes, staying connected without additional costs is a highly valued feature.
The new offering will also be a boon for travellers who prefer to stay connected with family and friends during long flights, whether to share photos from their journey or stay updated on news back home. Passengers can send and receive unlimited messages, ensuring they remain connected throughout their flight.
Lufthansa’s move is part of a broader trend across the aviation industry. Airlines are increasingly focusing on enhancing the passenger experience with digital services. As competition in the skies continues to grow, services such as free messaging are expected to be essential in attracting and retaining customers.
Starting in the summer of 2025, the free messaging service will be available on all Lufthansa long-haul flights, with no extra charges for passengers. This initiative underscores the airline’s commitment to improving customer satisfaction and providing modern, accessible services on its global network.
