German Army vehicles to get digital radio equipment

From Rheinmetall and KNDS

Rheinmetall and KNDS have secured a significant contract worth €1.98 billion from the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw). This six-year agreement mandates digitalising the German Army’s land-based vehicle communication systems. Rheinmetall is responsible for half of the contract’s value.

This project’s primary focus is the “digitalisation of land-based operations,” one of the German Army’s most critical initiatives to modernise its communications infrastructure.

A central element of the project involves replacing outdated radios with new D-LBO (Digital Land-Based Operations) command radio transmitters and updating the associated software.

The new IT system will consist of advanced communication devices, computers, software, and IT services. It will provide real-time data exchange between platforms, soldiers, and sensors, enhancing operational capabilities and interoperability.

The contract covers the integration of digital radio transmitters and command-and-control systems into various Bundeswehr vehicles. The entire project is overseen by the ArGe D-LBO consortium, which includes Rheinmetall.

The new systems’ rollout is expected to begin in mid-2025 and apply to approximately 10,000 combat and support vehicles. This extensive upgrade is scheduled to be completed by 2030.

In addition, a second contract has been awarded to the ArGe ISI (IT-system integration), which involves merging the IT systems across all land forces’ vehicle and platform systems under the D-LBO programme.

The contract, valued at €1.2 billion, is a collaboration between Rheinmetall and Blackened. It further strengthens the integration of advanced digital technologies into the Bundeswehr’s operations.

The German Army is the land component of Germany’s military. Established in 1955, it succeeded the Wehrmacht of World War II. The modern German Army is a key member of NATO and the European Union’s defence efforts.

Germany’s army has historically been renowned for its engineering prowess, tactical innovation, and leadership. During World War II, the Wehrmacht became infamous for its formidable strength and strategic operations, particularly during Operation Barbarossa.
