Hydrolix appoints Todd Persen as CTO

Amidst the company’s rapid growth

Hydrolix, a leading innovator in streaming data lake platforms, has appointed Todd Persen as its new Chief Technology Officer (CTO). This change comes as the company experiences significant growth: revenue increased eightfold from Q4 2023 to Q4 2024, and its customer base expanded from 39 to 389.

Hasan Alayli, the company’s co-founder, will transition to the role of Chief Scientist and focus on advancing the firm’s pioneering technologies.

The appointment of Persen and the company’s strategic executive shift mark a pivotal moment in Hydrolix’s development. Hydrolix has been scaling rapidly, growing its team from 50 to 135 employees in the past year. The company has outlined plans to expand its workforce in 2025, with an additional 100 hires, focusing on building a customer support team based in Portland.

Hydrolix’s recent growth has been buoyed by strong partnerships, particularly with Akamai and AWS.

Akamai leverages Hydrolix’s streaming data lake platform as the backbone of its managed observability service, TrafficPeak. In just nine months, TrafficPeak generated $8 million in revenue, demonstrating a 12x year-over-year growth.

Additionally, AWS has incorporated Hydrolix’s technology into Cascade, a fully managed SaaS solution for CloudFront and WAF users. Cascade provides real-time observability for logs and is available in the AWS Marketplace, further bolstering Hydrolix’s presence in the market.

Persen brings extensive experience to his new role. He was the CEO and co-founder of Era Software, the creator of EraSearch, a cloud-native storage product for managing petabyte-scale log data.

Prior roles

Following ServiceNow’s acquisition of Era Software in 2022, Persen served as the group product manager for ServiceNow Cloud Observability’s log management capabilities. His prior leadership roles included co-founder and CTO of InfluxData, as well as observability lead at Pivotal Software. Persen holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Central Florida and an MBA from the University of Florida.

Alayli, who previously served as CTO, co-founded Hydrolix in 2018. In his new role as Chief Scientist, he will continue to steer the company’s long-term innovation strategy and growing portfolio of patents and research initiatives. Alayli’s background includes roles at Splunk, Cedexis, and Cisco Systems, providing him with a solid foundation to guide the company’s future advancements.

In a statement, Alayli expressed his enthusiasm about Persen’s appointment: “I am excited that Todd is joining us at a pivotal moment in the life of our company. His strategic leadership will be invaluable as we scale our technology infrastructure and develop a roadmap that addresses the market’s needs and opportunities.”

Marty Kagan, co-founder and CEO of Hydrolix, echoed Alayli’s sentiment: “Our product has been deployed in hundreds of production environments, and adding Todd to our team will allow us to accelerate product innovation even further. His addition strengthens our technical leadership and enables Hasan to focus on driving long-term technical innovation.”

Persen expressed excitement about the opportunity, saying, “Hydrolix is the only company with a solution that works at a massive production scale while preserving existing technology investments. Our priority will be to expand our product line and tap into new markets and use cases.”

Hydrolix’s unique streaming data lake platform leverages stream processing, decoupled storage, high-density compression, and indexed search to offer real-time query performance at a terabyte scale.

The platform enables businesses to optimise operations, elevate business intelligence, and drive growth while reducing the cost of log data storage and usage. Trusted by Fortune 500 companies across industries, Hydrolix continues to innovate in security, observability, content delivery, digital advertising, AI/ML, and regulatory compliance.

Founded in 2018 and headquartered in Portland, Oregon, Hydrolix is revolutionising how companies handle data-intensive applications. It provides scalable, cost-effective solutions for today’s data-driven world.
