Jordan and Bahrain to Enter into a Bilateral Agreement to Tackle Conflict and Terrorism
In this era of increasing geo-political tensions, more countries seek to establish strong international cooperation to maintain social stability. Jordan and Bahrain have followed suit by renewing collaboration across various fields, including conflict resolution.
Both countries announced these plans for cooperation at a meeting held earlier this month. On August 16, 2022, the King of Jordan received Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani during the official visit of the Bahrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs. Other officials that attended the meeting include Ahmed bin Yousef Al Ruwaie, the Bahrainian ambassador to Jordan, and Ayman Safadi, the Deputy Prime Minister of Jordan.
Al Zayani engaged in separate talks with the Ayman Safadi. However, King Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein discussed extensively with the Minister how Bahrain and Jordan could maintain stability within the region. More specifically, both countries deliberated on the Palestine-Israeli conflict, the crisis in Yemen, Iran’s nuclear profile, and the Ukraine-Russia war.
The King and the Bahrainian Minister agreed that their cooperation is vital to maintaining stability in the Middle Eastern region. Moreso, both countries emphasized their intention to maintain cooperative relations towards combating terrorism and extremism within the Arab world. Both stakeholders commended Egypt’s efforts to broker a cease-fire in Gaza. They agreed that the recent two-state solution for Palestinians and Israelis is the most efficient resolution strategy. They also discussed other political conflicts like the Syrian civil war. Both authorities deliberated on the possibility of utilizing pan-Arab cooperation to solve the crisis in the Syrian civil war. The war has been ongoing since 2011.
Other agreements between Bahrain and Jordan
This cooperation renewal is not the first of agreements between Bahrain and Jordan. In 2021, the Kings of both Bahrain and Jordan held a strategic meeting in Bahrain. King Hamad, Bahrain’s King, discussed extensively with King Abdullah II how the Palestinian crisis was of great concern to the Arab world. They also agreed that expanding existing ties and bilateral trade would be vital to the economic progress of both countries. Among other things, the Kings decided to initiate strong relations to boost post-pandemic recovery in Jordan and Bahrain. Most importantly, this meeting set the much-needed foundation for the current consultation.
Last month, both countries entered into a multilateral industrial agreement involving countries like Egypt and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Also, days after the meeting, leaders of both countries (alongside countries like Egypt, Iraq, and UAE) held a mini-Arab summit to deliberate on strengthening Arab ties. Apart from these multilateral ties, both countries have a bilateral cooperation agreement to boost free trade across both markets.
Conclusion
Cooperation among Middle Eastern countries has become stronger over the years. Thus, it is expected that more countries will announce plans for bilateral or multilateral agreements directed at maintaining peace and economic stability across the region.
