Karpowership orders 24 dual-fuel engines from MAN Energy Solutions

Boosting fleet capacity by 500 MW
Karpowership, a global energy transition company and the world’s largest operator of floating power plants (powership), has commissioned MAN Energy Solutions to deliver 24 18V51/60DF dual-fuel engines. These engines, each with a capacity of 20.7 MW for power generation, will be deployed aboard several of Karpowership’s vessels, which operate globally.
The engines will play a crucial role in Karpowership’s expansion, enhancing its ability to offer flexible and sustainable energy solutions in regions facing energy shortages. The partnership between Karpowership and MAN Energy Solutions, which dates back to 2009, remains a key driver of global energy access, particularly in areas with limited infrastructure or those recovering from natural disasters.
The addition of the 24 new dual-fuel engines will increase Karpowership’s fleet capacity by approximately 500 MW, reinforcing its mission to provide reliable power in some of the world’s most challenging environments.
Vital energy
Karpowership’s fleet of floating power plants is vital in areas with prevalent energy shortages, providing a quick and cost-effective solution.
These powerships are deployed primarily in regions across Asia, South and Central America, and Africa, often serving areas where inadequate local infrastructure or energy supply has been disrupted due to natural disasters. The addition of the 24 new dual-fuel engines will further enhance Karpowership’s ability to offer flexible power solutions that can adapt to the specific needs of each region.
Alexander Stöckler, Head of Sales, Tendering & Project Management for MAN Energy Solutions’ Power Segment, said: “We are proud to have been ensuring secure energy supplies worldwide, in partnership with Karpowership, since 2009.
“With this order, we are expanding Karpowership’s fleet by approximately 500 MW. Dual-fuel technology enables customers to operate their Powerships reliably at any location with the necessary fuel flexibility.”
Gökhan Koçak, Chief Technical Operations Officer, Karpowership, added, “We are thrilled about and proud of our long-standing partnership with MAN Energy Solutions. They have been with us throughout our journey in supporting access to energy and decarbonising grids globally. We are pleased that we can rely on MAN Energy Solutions’ technology to support our growth as a leading energy transition company.”
Dr Tilman Tütken, Vice President of Strategic Projects at MAN Energy Solutions, highlighted the unique advantages of dual-fuel technology in supporting the powership concept. “MAN Energy Solutions’ dual-fuel technology is particularly suitable for the powership concept as it allows Karpowership to flexibly switch between different types of fuel depending on local availability. In addition to natural gas, the 18V51/60DF engine can run on liquid biofuel and other liquid fuels,” he explained.
Dual-fuel technology
The dual-fuel technology enables Karpowership to switch between natural gas, liquid biofuel, and other liquid fuels. This ensures a reliable and sustainable energy supply for its floating power plants, regardless of local fuel availability.
Timur Iyi, Managing Director of MAN Energy Solutions Turkey, reflected on the fruitful history between the two companies. “Through our long-standing partnership with Karpowership, we have received orders for over 150 engines and are pleased that we have been able to win its confidence again.
“In addition to our efficient, flexible, and powerful engines, our experience and service quality have also played a decisive role; we have been able to increase the availability of the engines in Karpowership’s existing fleet over the past few years.”
The builder, operator, and owner of power-plant ships, Karpowership operates in over 20 countries across four continents. With a fleet of 40 power ships and a total global installed capacity exceeding 7,500 MW, It is the world’s largest power ship operator.
The company employs over 2,600 people and is a leader in providing scalable energy solutions, leveraging its powership fleet, floating LNG technology, and other innovations to decarbonise grids and deliver cleaner, more sustainable energy worldwide.
