Bahrain International Airport to get Leonardo air traffic control and radar systems

In boost for Bahrain’s airspace

Bahrain’s Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications has signed a contract with Leonardo to upgrade Bahrain International Airport’s air traffic control and radar systems. The initiative, endorsed at the 2024 Bahrain International Airshow, underscores Bahrain’s commitment to improving aviation safety, enhancing airspace efficiency at the airport in Manama, and enhancing regional air navigation services.

Under the agreement, Leonardo will supply, deliver, and install state-of-the-art radar systems, including the ATCR 33S NG primary surveillance radar and the SIR S/I secondary surveillance radar.

These advanced technologies, alongside associated equipment, will significantly enhance Bahrain’s air traffic management capabilities, providing real-time, high-resolution surveillance across the Arabian Gulf nation’s airspace.

The project will unfold over three years, concluding in early 2027. In addition to installing the new systems, the contract includes comprehensive in-service support, ensuring the operational effectiveness and sustainability of the radar systems throughout the agreement.

Leonardo’s commitment to Bahrain extends beyond on-site installations; the company will also provide remote services and support, delivering top-tier radar technology to strengthen the country’s aviation infrastructure. The upgrade is a critical advancement in Bahrain’s air traffic management capacity and reinforces the nation’s strategic role within Middle Eastern aviation.

Bahrain’s ongoing investment in its aviation sector reflects a broader strategy to position itself as a key player in regional air travel and logistics. The collaboration with Leonardo elevates Bahrain’s air traffic control standards and improves safety and operational efficiency in the skies above Bahrain.

As the Manama project progresses, the enhanced radar systems are anticipated to support air traffic controllers, benefiting airlines and passengers alike.

The Bahrain International Airshow 2024 took place from November 13 to 15. It showcased a record 125 aircraft, including the debut appearance of the USAF B-52 bomber. The event featured impressive aviation displays and significant business deals, highlighting Bahrain’s growing role in the aviation sector.

Attendees enjoyed diverse attractions, such as an aviation museum, science shows, and interactive activities. The airshow aimed to foster international collaboration and innovation within the aerospace industry.
