Mark Irwin is to retire as Group Chief Executive of Serco
Anthony Kirby appointed replacement
Serco has announced that Mark Irwin, the company’s Group Chief Executive, will retire on February 28, 2025, after 12 years of service. During the transition period, he will continue to support the company as a strategic adviser.
Anthony Kirby, who currently serves as CEO of Serco’s UK & Europe division, will succeed Irwin as Group Chief Executive starting March 1, 2025.
Reflecting on his time at the helm, Irwin expressed gratitude for the progress made during his leadership. He highlighted the company’s commitment to safety, strong financial performance, and the development of its largest-ever growth pipeline.
Irwin said: “It has been a true privilege to lead Serco, and I am delighted with the progress we have made in the last few years, especially in terms of our financial stability and strategic growth. I am confident that Anthony will continue to build on these solid foundations.”
Irwin’s successor, Anthony Kirby, expressed his enthusiasm for leading the company: “It is an honour to be selected to lead this amazing company, of which I have been a part for seven years. Serco is in great shape, and I am confident we can continue developing our strategy and strengthening our market position.”
John Rishton, Serco’s Chair, added: “Mark has shown exceptional dedication and leadership throughout his tenure, particularly as Group Chief Executive. We wish him all the best in his retirement.”
Rishton also voiced his confidence in Kirby’s leadership ability, noting his pivotal roles within Serco, including Chief Operating Officer and CEO of the UK & Europe division.
Kirby’s basic annual salary will be £845,000, and he may receive performance-based bonuses. He will also be eligible for pension contributions, and long-term incentive shares are tied to Serco’s overall performance.
Irwin will receive the contractual entitlement of 12 months’ notice, which began on January 13, 2025. He will also be entitled to a bonus for 2024 and a pro-rated bonus for his time in 2025 based on performance metrics.
