MBDA unveils New Sky Warden effector concept

Demonstrates the system’s advanced capabilities

MBDA has launched a groundbreaking effector concept for its Sky Warden counter-uncrewed aerial systems (C-UAS) modular solution.

The new development, presented at the 2024 Farnborough International Airshow, features a ground-launched anti-air munition specifically designed to target Class 1 and smaller Class 2 uncrewed aircraft systems (sUAS) and loitering munitions.

The innovative effector concept collaborates with Fortem Technologies, incorporating their DroneHunter technology. This partnership allows for the rapid integration of a warhead on a drone, providing a cost-effective solution for neutralising aerial threats. Preliminary tests have confirmed the munition’s effectiveness and lethality.

Éric Béranger, CEO of MBDA, commented on the advancement: “Our flagship Sky Warden modular C-UAS system is crafted to evolve at the same pace as the rapidly advancing drone threat landscape, as evidenced by our recent trials.

“This latest effector innovation epitomises MBDA’s agility and innovation, addressing the dynamic needs of our customers. Developing an independent warhead design that can be added to drones on the battlefield highlights our collaborative approach and commitment to delivering low-cost counter-drone solutions.”

Proven capabilities

In addition to the new effector concept, MBDA showcased its Sky Warden system’s capabilities through a successful operational demonstration in Italy. This demonstration involved 17 customer delegations and tested Sky Warden against various offensive drone threats with various kinetic characteristics in realistic scenarios.

The system effectively neutralised all threats using a mix of jamming, hunter drones, lasers, and Mistral 3 missiles, demonstrating its comprehensive defensive capabilities.

Sky Warden employs artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance operational efficiency by assisting human operators in identifying and classifying threats through its array of sensors, including radar, passive RF, and electro-optical cameras. The system automatically assigns the most suitable effector for each danger, optimising response strategies.

The new RF-guided drone-style effector with a directional fragmenting warhead adds a valuable dimension to the existing Sky Warden suite, offering customers more adaptable options for countering aerial threats.

With its scalable and modular design, Sky Warden can be configured for various operational needs, whether vehicle-mounted or dismounted. It can integrate into layered air defence systems or function independently.

MBDA’s Sky Warden represents a significant leap forward in C-UAS technology. It combines extensive experience in air defence with advanced effectors to address evolving threats effectively.

MBDA is a leading European multinational group specialising in complex weapon systems and playing a crucial role in global defence.

With over 14,000 employees across France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK, MBDA supports national sovereignty and advances innovative defence solutions. The company is co-owned by Airbus (37.5%), BAE Systems (37.5%), and Leonardo (25%).Top of FormBottom of Form
