Chinese military and aerospace prowess debuts at China Airshow 2024
J-35A stealth fighter jet unveiled
The 15th China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition, or Airshow China 2024, has started in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province, attracting global attention. The event, which opened on November 12, highlights China’s growing technological and military capabilities in the aerospace sector.
The global aviation industry has experienced significant growth, driven by increased air travel and technological advancements. China is emerging as a key player and is expected to surpass the US as the largest aviation market by the mid-2020s.
With booming domestic demand, China’s commercial and military aerospace investments make it a crucial force in global aviation.
Among the major attractions at Airshow China 2024 is the unveiling of the Shenyang J-35A, China’s latest fifth-generation stealth fighter jet. The J-35A is poised to be the land-based version of the J-35, a carrier-capable fighter developed by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation (SAC) for the People’s Liberation Army Navy.
However, the J-35A will be marketed to the People’s Liberation Army Air Force and select international buyers, such as Pakistan, which confirmed its aircraft purchase (formerly known as the J-31) in early 2024.
The J-35 and J-35A evolved from the FC-31/J-31, a design SAC originally intended for export as an alternative to the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II.
Public display
Two J-35A aircraft are displayed for the first time at the airshow, which concludes on November 17, signalling China’s ambition to compete with other global powers, including the US, in the high-tech defence sector.
In addition to the Chinese fighter jets, the airshow has highlighted other advanced military equipment, including the upgraded Z-20 helicopter. The Z-20 is an enhanced variant of China’s versatile utility helicopter, featuring more advanced avionics and capabilities suited for modern warfare.
Drones take centre stage this year, with a dedicated drone zone introduced. China’s growing investment in uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) reflects their increasing role in contemporary conflicts, such as the ongoing war in Ukraine, where both Ukraine and Russia have modified and deployed commercial drones from Chinese drone maker DJI in combat operations, resulting in deaths of soldiers and civilians on both sides.
While the Chinese airshow is a military spectacle, it also features several civil aviation innovations, including China’s homegrown commercial aircraft. Industry leaders worldwide are keen to witness China’s strides in aerospace technology, which continues to expand rapidly.
However, the airshow has not been without tragedy. On the eve of the event, a fatal hit-and-run incident near the airshow venue claimed the lives of at least 35 people and injured dozens more.
Despite the tragedy, the Airshow China 2024 remains a key event in the international aerospace calendar, where China demonstrates its advancing military technology and aerospace ambitions.
