The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has unveiled an initiative designed to elevate the performance of taxi services across the Arabian Gulf emirate. The measures focus on improving passenger experience, comfort, and safety while ensuring that taxis meet the highest standards of cleanliness and sustainability.

Aligned with a broader commitment to providing top-tier transportation services, the new initiative aims to raise the quality of the taxi sector in Dubai. They also reflect Dubai RTA’s efforts to support Dubai’s vision of cultivating a clean, sustainable environment for residents and visitors alike.

Adel Shakri, Director of Planning and Business Development at Dubai RTA’s Public Transport Agency, said: “We are intensifying our awareness and training programmes for taxi drivers and instructors at driving schools, focusing on maintaining vehicle cleanliness.

“Additionally, the provision of uniforms for drivers is being expanded. To improve the in-cab environment, we’ve also introduced a pilot phase using high-quality air fresheners in over 500 airport taxis, AI-based cameras to detect smoking, and more frequent vehicle inspections.”

A vital aspect of these measures is establishing a metric to assess the impact of cleanliness initiatives. Dubai RTA has introduced a monthly operational index that tracks vehicle and driver cleanliness, with data on cleanliness-related observations per 100,000 Hala Taxi trips.

Furthermore, customer satisfaction surveys and mystery shopper assessments will be conducted every six months starting in 2025 to ensure continuous cleanliness and overall service quality improvement.

Shakri added: “These efforts are central to our mission of enhancing the quality of transportation in Dubai. Improving our taxis’ safety and comfort ensures passengers have a more pleasant and secure journey. This aligns with Dubai’s broader goal to create a cleaner, more sustainable environment while also meeting the high expectations of our residents and visitors.”
