New NATO missile defence base in Poland is operational

‘Aegis Ashore’ reinforces transatlantic security

A pivotal milestone in NATO’s defensive capabilities has been achieved as the new US ballistic missile defence site in Redzikowo, Poland, known as ‘Aegis Ashore,’ is now operational.

This development significantly enhances NATO’s ability to safeguard its member nations against ballistic missile threats, crucially reinforcing transatlantic security.

Aegis Ashore, a cornerstone of NATO’s broader missile shield strategy, is specifically designed to detect, track, and intercept ballistic missiles in flight.

Its activation underscores NATO’s proactive stance in countering the escalating threat posed by ballistic missile technologies, which have been prominently deployed in recent conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stressed: “NATO’s enhanced ballistic missile defence capability is a critical component of our collective defence strategy.

“The deployment of Aegis Ashore in Poland strengthens our capacity to protect European populations, territory, and forces from evolving ballistic missile threats,” he added.

Operational since the Washington Summit’s declaration of NATO’s Ballistic Missile Defence ‘Enhanced Operational Capability,’ the Aegis Ashore facility in Redzikowo complements similar sites in Romania.

It integrates seamlessly with US Navy destroyers in Rota, Spain, and an early-warning radar in Kurecik, Türkiye. Collectively, these assets form NATO’s robust defensive shield against short-to-intermediate-range ballistic missiles.

The Aegis Ashore missile employs the Aegis combat system and standard missile technology to detect, track, and intercept incoming missiles. Aegis Ashore provides a robust shield against potential threats, ensuring rapid response capabilities and integration with broader defence networks.

Its versatility and precision make it a pivotal asset in modern defence architectures. Its advanced radar and interception capabilities address evolving challenges in missile defence.

The Aegis Ashore sites in Poland and Romania are staffed by approximately 200 military personnel each. These personnel are dedicated to ensuring readiness and responsiveness in the face of emerging security challenges. This commitment is further underscored by the significant resources and advanced technology deployed at these sites.
